geography

The village on the western edge of the flat Bünztal lies at the foot of the Lindenberg . Its eastern slope is divided into two valleys: to the south the up to 90 meters deep ravine of the Wissenbach extends , to the west the significantly less pronounced valley of the Forstbach extends . Above the source of the Forstbach, between the Egghau ( 651  m above sea level ) and the ridge of the Lindenberg, there is a plateau with the Feldenmoos, an upland moor with two ponds that was exploited in the 1940s . Forstbach and Wissenbach join in front of the village center, the latter joins the Bünz after a little more than a kilometer . An area strip of over three kilometers in length extends in the north over the Bünz plane to almost Waltenschwil .

The main settlement of Boswil consists of the districts of Unterdorf, Oberdorf, Vorstatt and Ritziziel, which have all grown together. The new building district east of the railway line has almost grown together with Bünzen . The hamlet of Sentenhof , a former estate of the Muri monastery ( 535  m above sea level ), is located over two kilometers south of the village on the municipality border, on the eastern side of the Wissenbach. history

During the Neolithic , between 8000 and 10'000 BC BC, settlers first settled on the then fish-rich Bünzersee and settled down. The lake later silted up into a bog . In 2007 an early Bronze Age large vessel (together with four cups) and a neighboring fire pit were discovered in the Eibolde area south of Boswil. The vessel, 82 cm high and 85 cm wide at its widest point and set deep in the ground, was intended for provisions. Around 1930 there was a Celtic cemetery dating from around 350 to 325 BC. To the fore. Remnants of walls from farms at various locations are evidence of Roman times . The Martin's Chapel, first mentioned in 1110, stands on the foundations of a Roman residential complex.

Bozwila was first mentioned in a document in a certificate from the Great Minster in Zurich . This document is not dated, but according to the latest research results it comes from the period between 874 and 887. The place name is derived from the Old High German Pozinwila and means "Landgut des Pozo". Another landowner was the Fraumünster in Zurich, which had a church built in Boswil towards the end of the 9th century. The right of patronage first passed to the Habsburgs , around 1380 to the Hallwyler and finally in 1483 to the Muri monastery . The Habsburgs were the sovereigns and holders of high jurisdiction .

In 1415, the Swiss conquered Aargau and Boswil was now the capital of the office of the same name in the Free Offices , a common rule . A major fire in 1649 destroyed a third of the village. After the Second Villmerger War of 1712, the victorious Reformed towns of Zurich , Bern and Glarus divided the Freiamt into two parts. They drew a dead straight line from the church in Oberlunkhofen to the gallows in Fahrwangen . This line ran exactly through Boswil and even through some houses. The village was inhibited in its development because two different legal systems now applied. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Boswil was reunified and was initially a municipality in the Muri district of the short-lived canton of Baden , since 1803 it has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

Industrialization began in the second half of the 19th century . On June 1, 1875, the Wohlen - Muri section of the Aargau Southern Railway was opened. From 1870, peat was extracted in the Bünzmoos marshland, which was created by the silting up of the Bünzersee . In the 1930s and 1940s, a number of peat exploitation operations came into being, which removed peat over an area of over 200 hectares to a depth of six meters. More companies settled there and Boswil developed into an industrial location. With two exceptions during the Second World War and the economic crisis of the 1970s, the population rose continuously.

Attractions

Boswil's first church, today's Old Church , dates back to the 11th century. From 1487 to 1498 there was an extension in the Gothic style, the church tower dates from this time. After the building became too small, it was profaned in 1913 and later sold to the painter Richard Arthur Nüscheler along with the rectory and Odilo Chapel . His descendants sold the ensemble of buildings to the “Alte Kirche Boswil” foundation. With several renovations, the building fabric could be preserved. In the old church today, cultural events are held at regular intervals, some of which attract worldwide attention. The former rectory initially served as a retirement home for artists, today it is the seat of the Künstlerhaus Boswil Foundation with a boarding house for artists and course participants.

After the neighboring village of Bünzen had received a new church, the Boswil parish also decided to build a new one in 1867. The project did not materialize because the canton refused to share the costs. After a second failed project, the new parish church of St. Pankraz , a basilica in neo-Gothic style , was finally built between 1888 and 1890 .

The Martinskapelle in Oberdorf, the Weissenbach sawmill in the hamlet of the same name and the Sentenhof south of the village are also of historical importance .

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Yellow crescent moon growing in blue." The community bears the former coat of arms of the Lords of Boswil, a ministerial family of the Habsburgs. For centuries, there was disagreement about whether the crescent moon was waxing or waning. The face appeared for the first time in 1734. In December 2001, the municipal council determined the definitive variant.

population

The population developed as follows:

year 1765 1850 1900 1930 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010

Politics and law

The assembly of those entitled to vote, the municipal assembly , exercises legislative power. The executing authority is the five-member municipal council . He is elected by the people in the majority procedure, his term of office is four years. The parish council leads and represents the parish. To this end, it implements the resolutions of the municipal assembly and the tasks assigned to it by the canton. The District Court of Muri is primarily responsible for legal disputes . Boswil belongs to the Friedensrichterkreis XIII (Muri).

Community clerk scandal

In 2018/2019 the municipality of Boswil was in the media across Switzerland due to a scandal. First, the local government had made a list of the names and status of their welfare recipients publicly available, which should have been an oversight. Community clerk Daniel Wicki, on the other hand, stated that it was too time-consuming to blacken the names for the community bill. Then the look revealed that the community clerk on Facebook was agitating against refugees, demanding the death penalty and calling for vigilante justice against foreign criminals, such as "Put them on the wall and give them a clean 9 mm vaccination !!!!" Despite many demands for dismissal, the municipal teamman Michael Weber ( SVP ) stood behind Wicki, who was given leave of absence after criminal proceedings were initiated for racial discrimination. The public prosecutor's office in Muri-Bremgarten stopped the proceedings, whereupon Wicki resumed his work. On January 18, Blick reported that the community clerk was not forwarding the documents of naturalized persons and that proceedings were being dragged off for years. On the same day he was released without notice.

economy

According to the company structure statistics (STATENT) collected in 2015, Boswil has around 1,300 jobs, 10% of them in agriculture, 40% in industry and 50% in the service sector. In addition to several commercial and service companies, the municipality also has a considerable number of industrial companies that are mainly active in the construction and ancillary construction sectors or in the transport sector.

traffic

The busy main road 25 between Lenzburg and Sins runs right through the village. Other roads lead to the neighboring villages of Bünzen and Kallern. The SBB station Boswil-Bünzen on the Olten - Rotkreuz railway line , on which the S26 trains run, serves as a public transport link .

education

All grades of compulsory elementary school are taught in Boswil, with the exception of the district school , which can be attended in Muri . The closest grammar school is the Cantonal School in Wohlen .
