history

The first documentary mention of Geltwile was in the Acta Murensia in 1160 . The place name comes from the Old High German Geltinwilari and means "Hofsiedlung des Gelto". Geltwil and Isenbergschwil belonged to the oldest property of the Muri monastery , founded in 1027, and numerous monks of this important Benedictine abbey came from here. After the conquest by the confederates in 1415, both villages came to the Muri office in the Free Offices , but remained closely connected to the monastery. On March 20, 1797, a major fire destroyed all the buildings in Isenbergschwil, and the settlement was rebuilt with a larger gap between the buildings.

Sonderbund war memorial (previously stood as a tombstone on the Muri cemetery)

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Together with Isenbergschwil and Winterschwil (which is now part of Beinwil (Freiamt)) , Geltwil formed a municipality in the Muri district of the short-lived canton of Baden . After the canton of Aargau was founded in 1803, the municipality fell apart. But on June 26, 1816, Geltwil and Isenbergschwil were finally merged. During the Sonderbund War there was a battle on November 12, 1847 in the village square of Geltwil. The troops of the Confederation, led by Guillaume Henri Dufour , met units of the Sonderbund . A dozen people were killed in the exchange of fire in thick fog (see battle of Geltwil ).

1942 Switzerland had under pressure from the Axis powers , the DST introduce. But the community assembly of Geltwil decided unanimously to refuse the implementation of this externally imposed measure and thus to set "a signal against the adaptability". There were two times in Switzerland, besides the official one, there was also a time in Geltwil. The Swiss media ridiculed this decision as an idiosyncratic approach by backwoods farmers. When summer time was introduced for the second time in 1981, however, Geltwil no longer offered any resistance.
