Location of the municipality | |
Buttwil ( Swiss German : Buttel, ˈbʊtːəl ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Muri district and is located on the western edge of the Bünztal .
geography
The village is located on a terrace on the eastern slope of the Lindenberg , two kilometers west (and around 180 meters above sea level) of the district capital. Another terrace with the hamlet of Galitzi ( 724 m above sea level ) extends about half a kilometer southwest of the village . Otherwise, the slope drops evenly and is drained by several small streams that flow further east into the Sörikerbach and finally into the Bünz . The Wissenbach flows in a deep ravine along the western and northern municipal boundaries .
The area of the municipality is 457 hectares , 112 hectares of which are forested and 60 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 813 m above sea level. M. on the ridge of the Lindenberg, the deepest at 570 m above sea level. M. on the eastern municipality boundary. Neighboring communities are Boswil in the north, Muri in the east, Geltwil in the southeast, Hitzkirch in the southwest, Schongau in the west and Bettwil in the northwest.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1160 in the Acta Murensia as Butwile . The place name comes from the Old High German Putinwilari and means "Hofsiedlung des Puto". The Muri Abbey owned here since its inception in 1027 large landholdings and the lower courts . The rulers and holders of high jurisdiction were the Habsburgs .
In 1415 the Swiss conquered Aargau and Buttwil was now part of the Muri office in the Free Offices , a common rule . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Together with Wissenbach, Buttwil became its own municipality and agency in the Muri district of the short-lived canton of Baden . Buttwil has been part of the canton of Aargau since 1803, but formed a district municipality together with Muri, Aristau and Geltwil until 1816 .
For many centuries Buttwil was a modest village dominated by agriculture . In the second half of the 19th century the population decreased by over a third as many impoverished villagers emigrated. After a long period of stagnation, building activity began in the mid-1970s. The population tripled in thirty years. Buttwil developed from a farming community to a residential community. Further growth is not to be expected as the municipality no longer has any significant building land reserves.
Attractions
An immigrant violinist donated 500 guilders for the construction of the Jakobskapelle . It was built in 1666 by craftsmen from the region and consecrated in 1669. In 1949/50 the chapel was extended by two window axes.
coat of arms
The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red and white scallop with pierced wings." The scallop is a reference to the numerous pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela , one of which led via Buttwil. The name of the hamlet Galitzi (for Galicia ) also reminds of this . Until 1957, the congregation had used the torture column of Christ as a coat of arms , but historically it stands for the entire free offices.
