Jacob's Chapel

The Jakobskapelle (more precisely: St. Jakobus Major Chapel ) is a Roman Catholic chapel in Buttwil in the canton of Aargau . The listed building from the 17th century is dedicated to James the Elder and is located on the eastern edge of the village.

In 1666, Hans Jacob Bartlime, a violinist who immigrated from Esch near Wiesbaden , donated 500 guilders for the construction of the chapel. The Muri monastery , the collator of the Muri parish , to which Buttwil still belongs to this day, donated an additional 100 guilders . The construction work was carried out by craftsmen from the region, and the inauguration took place on July 10, 1669. Prince Abbot Plazidus Zurlauben had the roof turret renewed in 1715 . In 1857 Melchior Paul von Deschwanden painted a new altarpiece. After a small sacristy was added in 1923 , the chapel was extended by two window axes in 1949/50. The retracted choir , the choir arch and the longitudinal walls of the nave were preserved while the floor was lowered.
