Anita Riecher-Rössler (born September 8, 1954 in Horb - Nordstetten ) is a German psychiatrist , psychotherapist and psychoanalyst . She is currently professor of psychiatry at the University of Basel and chief physician at the University Psychiatric Clinics in Basel .

Life

Anita Riecher-Rössler, née Riecher, studied medicine in Heidelberg and London - as a scholarship holder of the German Study Foundation . She then worked in internal medicine and neurology in Heidelberg as well as in the psychiatric clinic and later in the psychosomatic clinic of the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim, interrupted by a research stay at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. In 1978 she submitted her dissertation in internal medicine and received the Dr. med. In 1994 she completed her habilitation on late schizophrenia and received the venia docendi at the University of Heidelberg / Mannheim. She also had teaching positions in London and Innsbruck. In 1998 she was the first woman in a German-speaking country to be appointed to a chair in psychiatry at the University of Basel , Switzerland.

Act

Anita Riecher-Rössler was clinically involved in the entire field of general psychiatry and psychotherapy. She set up various special outpatient clinics, for example for the early detection and treatment of schizophrenic psychoses or for the treatment of mental illnesses during pregnancy / lactation or menopause . In September 2017 she gave up her clinical work and has since devoted herself only to research.

She currently heads the cross-diagnosis center for gender research and early detection at the University Psychiatric Clinics in Basel. She is active in various associations for the early detection of mental illnesses and the promotion of women's mental health (e.g. the International Association of Women's Mental Health, IAWMH, and the European Psychiatric Association, EPA). She has numerous consulting activities, including setting up early detection centers for psychoses and women-sensitive treatment options. She is also the editor of the Archives of Women's Mental Health magazine.

Anita Riecher-Rössler is also involved in various university commissions as well as in the Swiss Study Foundation as a supervisor and as a member of its education committee.

Her main research interests are, on the one hand, schizophrenic psychoses, especially the early detection of these diseases and their gender differences, including gender-specific therapeutic approaches. On the other hand, she deals with the peculiarities of mental illnesses in women, including the influence of estrogens , but also of psychosocial risk factors on the psychological well-being of women. She is also interested in the peculiarities of mental illnesses during pregnancy and breastfeeding or during menopause.

Awards

In March 2017, Anita Riecher-Rössler was awarded the Constance Pascal - Helen Boyle Prize by the European Psychiatric Association for exceptional achievements and achievements in European psychiatry. The prize is named after two pioneers in the history of psychiatry, Constance Pascal and Helen Boyle , and is awarded exclusively to women; it is associated with prize money of 10,000 euros.
