University Psychiatric Clinics Basel
The Universitäre Psychiatrische Kliniken (UPK) Basel are an independent institution under public law that operates several psychiatric clinics in cooperation with the University of Basel . These include the clinic for adults, the clinic for children and adolescents, the clinic for forensics and a private clinic.
history
According to a resolution of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt in 1882, the Friedmatt insane asylum was opened in 1886 on extensive grounds outside the city with 214 beds. In 1899 the name was changed to “Cantonal Sanatorium and Nursing Home Friedmatt”. In 1954 the walls around the site were torn down. In the 1960s the name was changed to "Psychiatric University Clinic" (PUK).
As early as 1923, the “Psychiatric University Polyclinic” was opened as an outpatient institution in the city center. This belonged administratively to Friedmatt until 1977, when it came under the management of the Basel Cantonal Hospital .
In 2005, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric University Clinic (KJUP) and the Psychiatric University Clinic (PUK) were merged under the name Universitäre Psychiatrische Kliniken (UPK) Basel, and in 2010 the Polyclinic was incorporated. In 2012, the company was converted to its current legal form.
In 2013, UPK Basel introduced the concept of open doors - the so-called “open door policy”. In the same year, the Psychiatry Health Center on Kornhausgasse was opened as an outpatient, low-threshold offer from UPK in downtown Basel. In 2017, the polyclinic of the child and adolescent psychiatric clinic moved into the same building.
