The University Hospital Basel (formerly Kantonsspital Basel , before 1973 Bürgerspital Basel ) is one of five university hospitals in Switzerland and the largest health center in north-western Switzerland. The university hospital has been entrepreneurially independent since the beginning of 2012. After being outsourced from the state administration of the canton of Basel-Stadt , it now has the organizational form of a public-law institution.

With its 7,219 employees (as of December 31, 2017) who treat 38,000 inpatients per year (as of 2017), Basel University Hospital is one of the largest employers in the region. Characteristic is the close connection with the University of Basel and the life sciences companies based in the region ( F. Hoffmann-La Roche , Novartis, etc.), which enables teaching and research at the highest scientific level.

There are 44 clinics that cover the entire spectrum of human medicine . There are also 8 interdisciplinary treatment centers.

Location and architecture

University Hospital Basel - Clinic 1

The University Hospital Basel is located in the center of the city, not far from the Rhine, and is very easy to reach by public transport . The buildings are grouped around an idyllic garden and are in the immediate vicinity of the University Children's Hospital in Basel (UKBB) .

The building complex Klinikum 1, built between 1937 and 1945 under the direction of the architect Hermann Baur, is a modern classic and an example of one of the earliest large hospitals in Switzerland. Many details, especially in the design, are well preserved. In 1978, as part of a complete renovation, Klinikum 2 was completed. The avant-garde pharmacy at the university hospital (1995–97) was designed by the Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron . In 2002, the extension to Klinikum 1 West, designed by Silvia Gmür, opened, and in December 2017 the operating wing East with 16 operating theaters, an intensive care unit, a recovery room and central sterilization unit opened.

history

In the Middle Ages, the monasteries were mostly entrusted with the care of the sick. In Basel, an early form of hospital management emerged in the Cluniac Priory of St. Alban, founded in 1083 . At the beginning of the 13th century the city had two hospitals. In 1260 a new hospital was founded at the back of the Barfüsserkirche .

A milestone in the development of medical care in Basel was the foundation of the university in 1460, which also had a medical faculty, the first north of the Alps. For the first time, it was also possible for students to be instructed by doctors at the bedside.

By moving to the Markgräflerhof on Hebelstrasse in 1842, what was then the citizen's hospital developed into a municipal hospital with a connection to the university. At this location, where the university hospital is still located today, in addition to the hospital, the madhouse and a beneficiary house for people in need were initially located. The facility had 322 beds. In 1865 the university hospital began to emerge in its present form. A contract between the citizens 'council and the canton stipulated that the Basel community was responsible for the citizens' hospital (as well as the orphanage and the alms office). The increased space requirement led to individual clinics being located in externally located state-owned new buildings (children's hospital, eye hospital, madhouse and women's hospital).

University Hospital Basel, formerly the Bürgerspital Basel, built 1939–1945. Laying of the foundation stone October 4, 1941. Inauguration of the building September 29, 1945. Costs of 30 million Swiss francs. Architects E. & P. Vischer, H.Baur, Bräuning Leu Dürig.

The university hospital received its modern form between 1939 and 1945 with the construction of Clinic 1 on Spitalstrasse. As part of a complete renovation, Klinikum 2 was built from 1969 to 1978. In 1973, the citizens' hospital became part of the state administration and thus the cantonal hospital. The name change to the University Hospital took place in 2004. The University Hospital Basel is currently planning renovation and expansion steps.

Teaching and Research

The University Hospital Basel works closely with the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel in teaching and research. The university hospital provides more than 1000 places for medical training and further education and cooperates with the university and other institutions in various research projects. The scientists are involved in national and international research projects and publish their findings in the most important scientific journals.

Heads

Important personalities in medicine have worked in Basel. Paracelsus (actually: Philippus Theocrastus Bombast von Hohenheim; 1493–1541), one of the fathers of alternative medicine, was a student and lecturer in Basel. Caspar Bauhin (1560–1624), one of the pioneers of anatomy, discovered the ileocecal valve in Basel , a seal between the large and small intestine that was named after him (Bauhin's valve). Felix Platter (1536–1614) is considered the founder of forensic medicine and is the author of a standard work on clinical medicine (“Praxeos medicae opus”; 1602–1608). A geriatric hospital in Basel was named after him. Martin Allgöwer (1917–2007), professor of surgery between 1967 and 1983, established the international reputation of the University Hospital Basel as a training center for surgeons.

Outlook / projects

In the next few years, the University Hospital Basel will implement several expansion projects. The architectural competition for the renovation of Clinic 2 has been completed. Construction should start in the next two to three years. The east operating wing was expanded and provided with three additional operating theaters; it opened in February 2018.
