Martin Allgöwer

Martin Allgöwer (born May 5, 1917 in St. Gallen ; † October 27, 2007 in Chur ) was a Swiss surgeon and university professor . As the successor to the legendary Rudolf Nissen , he was appointed to the Basel Chair of Surgery in 1967 .

Life

Allgöwer studied medicine at the University of Geneva , the University of Zurich and the University of Basel . After completing his studies, he initially devoted himself to cell biology . 1942 doctorate he in Basel to Dr. med. In the Bürgerspital Basel he then devoted himself to surgery. In 1951/52 he continued his work on histology and wound healing in Galveston (Texas) . He returned to Basel and completed his training as a surgeon. In 1955 he completed his habilitation with Rudolf Nissen. Shortly thereafter, from 1956 to 1966, he became chief physician at the Cantonal Hospital of Graubünden in Chur. Appointed in 1966, he became professor of surgery and chair of surgery at the University of Basel, and in 1967 head of the surgery department at the Basel clinic. After 16 years of service, he retired in 1983 .

Allgöwer developed new surgical methods , including the single-layer vascular anastomosis , the electrical stimulation test of the vagus nerve and closure methods after laparotomies . He gained importance as a pioneer of osteosynthesis and inventor of the Allgöwer suture . With Maurice E. Müller and the Swiss surgeon and chief physician in Liestal Hans Willenegger (1910–1998, resident in the Neu-Schauenburg estate ), he founded the working group for osteosynthesis issues in 1958 .

The National Councilor Walther Allgöwer was a brother.
