Swiss association Balgrist
The Swiss Balgrist Association has existed since 1909 and operates the Balgrist University Hospital. The association aims to promote the health of people suffering from the musculoskeletal system. In cooperation with the University of Zurich and other scientific institutions, the association also promotes teaching and research on the musculoskeletal system.
It was founded in 1909 as the "Swiss Association for crippled children" by the orthopedic surgeon Wilhelm Schulthess , the Riehen pastor Joseph Kägi, the Zurich education secretary Friedrich Zollinger and other personalities in order to treat orthopedic patients in the Seine of the founder of orthopedics Jean-André Venel (then: To enable "crippled") children from all over Switzerland to receive medical treatment, education and training.
The association was finally able to inaugurate a new building in 1912 as the first "institute" on the Balgrist hill, with Wilhelm Schulthess becoming its first director. Initially there were 74 places in the affiliated boarding school. In the "era of machine orthopedics" at that time, numerous mechanical devices were used, often stretching devices.
history
The Balgrist University Hospital developed from the institution for crippled children founded in 1912 . The first two directors, Schulthess and Hoessly, had already carried out clinical research and initiated a systematic and complete collection of medical files, which later became an archive that was important for research.
Richard Scherb also increasingly opened the clinic to the treatment of adults and achieved extensive extensions. Under Scherb, even after an agreement concluded in 1945 with the Canton of Zurich, the institution became a university clinic and the clinic director also became professor of orthopedics at the University of Zurich . Scherb was the first to analyze the human gait on a roller-walkway and to create "myokinesigrams", although at that time the muscle activity was initially felt by hand.
From 1950 to 1969 Max René Francillon was director of the Balgrist. In 1966 the facility was expanded to include the seven-story high-rise building, a new treatment wing, an auditorium and the ten-story staff house. In 1990 the third Swiss Paraplegic Center started operations.
Adam Schreiber , the director in office from 1969, built extensive research laboratories, for example for calcium metabolism or biomechanics , and for the first time hired employees for research tasks alone.
After Adam Schreiber retired , Hans Zollinger took over the management temporarily until the shoulder specialist Christian Gerber was appointed as the new director on October 1st, 1995 . In 1995 the Balgrist had 169 beds, 2,865 inpatients were treated with an average length of stay of 14 days. In 1995 there were 29,108 consultations with external patients and 2,442 surgical interventions were performed. The turnover was 70.7 million Swiss francs.
In August 2017, the spine specialist Mazda Farshad replaced the emeritus Christian Gerber.
