Originally, Gerber wanted to become a professional footballer and had already made it to the captain of the Swiss youth national football team when, at the age of 16, he landed on a shoal while jumping into Lake Neuchâtel and sustained a serious injury to his cervical spine . The accident and the subsequent operations by Maurice Edmond Müller aroused his interest in medicine and especially orthopedics.

He completed various internships, 1974 two months at the University of Oklahoma , 1977 six months in radiology and internal medicine at Yale Medical School at Yale University and two months in pathology at the University of California, San Diego . He then worked as an assistant doctor for nine months in internal medicine at the Herzogenbuchsee Hospital, seven months in the neurology department at the Inselspital at the University of Bern, two years in general surgery and traumatology at the Davos Hospital under Peter Matter , and three years in orthopedic surgery under Reinhold Ganz again working at Inselspital.

In 1979 he completed the United States Medical Licensing Examination . After completing his specialist training , he completed a six-month training course in shoulder surgery at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1984 and in tumor, foot and ankle surgery at the Hôpital Cochin in 1984/85 and in pediatric orthopedics at the Hôpital Trousseau in Paris in 1985 . From October 1985 to December 1991 Gerber worked as a senior physician at Inselspital and was appointed private lecturer by the University of Bern in January 1988 and adjunct professor for orthopedics in December 1991. In January 1992 he moved to the Friborg Cantonal Hospital as chief physician . On October 1, 1995, Christian Gerber was appointed full professor for orthopedics at the University of Zurich and appointed chief physician at the Balgrist University Orthopedic Clinic . He ran this clinic until his retirement in August 2017 and was also its medical director.

Even after his retirement he continues to work in the section for shoulder and elbow surgery at the Balgrist.

In 2000 Christian Gerber founded the Resortho Foundation to promote orthopedics by supporting research, training, further education and training.
