description

Agave sobria sometimes forms a short stem. The open, sprouting rosettes reach heights of up to 50 cm and a diameter of up to 150 cm. The variable, thick, linear to lanceolate gray to bluish, often transversely banded leaves are 45 to 80 cm long and 5 to 10 cm wide. The wavy to warty leaf margins are serrated flexibly. The needle-like end spine is 3 to 6 cm long.

The paniculate, slender inflorescence is 2.5 to 4 m high. The yellow flowers are 25 to 35 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on irregularly arranged branches. The broad, funnel-shaped flower tube is 3 to 4 mm long.

The elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 50 to 65 mm long and 15 to 18 mm wide. The moon-shaped, black seeds are 7 to 8 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from March to November.

Systematics and distribution

Agave sobria grows in Mexico in Baja California Sur in the mountain regions of the Sierra de la Gigantea on lava slopes up to 1050 m. It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Townshend Stith Brandegee was published in 1889. Synonyms are Agave affinis Trel. , Agave carminis Trel. and Agave slevinii Johnston .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Agave sobria subsp. sobria : The chromosome number is 2n = 60. It occurs in northern Mexico.
  • Agave sobria subsp. frailensis Gentry : It occurs in northern Mexico.
  • Agave sobria subsp. roseana (Trel.) Gentry : It occurs in northern Mexico.

Agave sobria is a member of the Deserticolae group , which is characterized by narrow, variable leaves, slender inflorescences and the tubular structure. The slender flowers with the long, narrow tepals, the lanceolate leaves with the distant peripheral teeth are typical. It is similar to Agave cerulata , but there are differences in leaf structure. Agave sobria is grown at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson .
