Franz Müller-Spahn

Franz Müller-Spahn (born August 18, 1950 in Munich , † August 4, 2009 in Basel ) was a German psychiatrist .

Life

Müller-Spahn completed his school days in Bavaria and initially studied biology and from 1971 medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich . In 1978 he graduated with a license to practice medicine . After completing his civil service , he voluntarily joined the medical service of the Bundeswehr , which in 1979 assigned him to the psychiatric university clinic in Munich , which was headed by Hanns Hippius . There he was soon able to take on an assistant doctor position and resigned from the Bundeswehr.

In 1980 he received his doctorate under Norbert Matussek (1922–2009) at the LMU Munich. Until 1987 he worked with interruptions as an assistant doctor at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Munich. In 1980/81 he was an assistant doctor at the Psychiatric and Neurological Department of the German Armed Forces in Munich and 1985/86 at the Neurological University Clinic in Munich. He completed his training as a specialist in psychiatry and neurology , which he completed in 1987, as well as additional training in psychotherapy , completed in 1988. From 1987 to 1990 he was senior physician at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Munich.

In 1989 he received his habilitation and in 1990 he was appointed C3 professor for psychiatry at the University of Göttingen , at whose psychiatric clinic he took over the management of the department for geriatric psychiatry . In 1991 he returned to the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Munich as professor and senior physician in charge, where he took over the management of the geriatric psychiatry research area.

From 1994 until his death he was full professor for psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Basel and director of the psychiatric university clinic . From 2002 he was a member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation .

His main focus was biological psychiatry and clinical psychopharmacology .
