Hanns Hippius

Hanns Hippius (born April 18, 1925 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) is a German psychiatrist and author . He is u. a. Author of the standard work Compendium of Psychiatric Pharmacotherapy and editor and co-author of numerous books on psychiatry and the history of psychiatry .

Education

Hippius studied medicine and chemistry from 1944 to 1952 in Freiburg / Breisgau, Marburg / Lahn and at the Free University of Berlin. In 1950 he received his doctorate in medicine.

Career

From 1950 to 1952 he was an assistant at the Institute for Experimental Therapy "Emil von Behring" in Marburg / Lahn, where he dealt with immunology , serology and bacteriology . From 1952 to 1967 he worked as a research assistant and senior physician at the Clinic for Psychiatry at the Free University of Berlin . In 1963 he completed his habilitation in psychiatry and neurology . From 1968 to 1970 he was a full professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychiatric Clinic II at the Free University of Berlin. In 1972 he became director of the University Clinic for Psychiatry at the University of Munich; he remained this until his retirement in 1994. He lives in Chiemgau.

Hippius was involved in the development of the first "atypical" neuroleptic clozapine . He is very committed to the work against the stigmatization of mentally and psychiatric patients. In 2014 he received the Wilhelm Griesinger Medal from the German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Neurology .

More functions

For many years he worked in the protection commission of the Federal Minister of the Interior . From 1971 to 1975 he was a member of the expert commission of the German Bundestag for the study "On the situation of psychiatry in the Federal Republic of Germany". From 1972 to 1974 he was President of the German Society for Psychiatry and Neurology (DGPN). Hippius is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (Halle / Saale) and an honorary member of many specialist societies.
