Public controversy

David Healy, director of the North Wales Department of Psychological Medicine, accused Siegfried Kasper in 2002 of having given his name to a pharmaceutical study that he had nothing to do with and that put a drug in a particularly good light. The then medical dean Wolfgang Schütz then passed the documents on to the rector, as he was responsible for disciplinary matters. Kasper himself spoke of a "huge misunderstanding". This has been criticized by the prestigious British Medical Journal as a typical case of ghostwriting and an unacceptable relationship between industry and academic psychiatrists. The controversy found its way into the book Hooked - Ethics, the Medical Profession, and the Pharmaceutical Industry .
