story
The University of Hong Kong goes back to the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese (香港 華人 西醫 書院), which was founded in 1887 by the Anglican London Missionary Society (倫敦 傳道 會). The university itself was only created when Sir Frederick Lugard, as governor of Hong Kong, said that a university had to be established in or near China in order to catch up with other European powers, particularly with Prussia , which had recently founded Tongji University in Shanghai had.
On March 16, 1910, Sir Frederick Lugard laid the foundation stone of the main building with the words that "a university for China" was being founded. In 1912 the college opened its philosophical, engineering and medical faculties. The medical faculty emerged from the previously established by the London Missionary Society in 1887 and later renamed "Hong Kong College of Medicine" in 1907.
On June 5, 1997, the Pillar of Shame was first placed on the podium of the Haking Wong building.
