The National Institute of Mental Health ( NIMH ) is one of the 27 institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH, in turn, belongs to the US Department of Health and is the most important authority for biomedical research in the US.
The NIMH is a research center specializing in mental disorders and the largest institution of its kind in the world. Founded in 1949, the institute is located in Bethesda, Maryland . It has an annual budget of around US $ 1.5 billion (financial year 2016).
