The United States Department of Health and Human Services ( English United States Department of Health and Human Services HHS, for short) is the US Department of Health and constitutes a part of the US federal government .

The department's mission is to “promote and protect the health and well-being of all US citizens by providing high-quality medical and humanitarian services and adequately supporting medical research, public health and social services.” The primary subsidiary is the US Public Health Service , who is subordinate to the Surgeon General of the United States and has a military form of organization. The Department is based in Washington, DC

It was through the Department of Education Organization Act created and participated in the May 4, 1980, together with the newly established Ministry of Education to work on. The tasks of the ministry were integrated into the Ministry of Health, Education and Welfare until the Federal Law was passed in 1979 . The department is led by the United States Secretary of Health.

The Department of Health has the largest budget of the US departments, ahead of the Department of Defense , but is only in the middle in terms of the number of employees.
