The Department of the Navy ( DON ; German  Naval Office or formerly Naval Ministry ) was created by federal law on April 30, 1798 to provide for the civil administration of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps . The Marine Office will by the Navy Secretary of State , the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) out. The Department of the Navy was cabinet rank until 1947 , but was then replaced by the National Security Act along with the Department of Waremerged Department of the Army subordinated to the National Military Establishment as the predecessor of the Department of Defense (Ministry of Defense).

The highest military commanders are the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) for the US Navy and the Commandant (CMC) for the US Marine Corps. Both report to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff rather than the Secretary of the Navy .

Today the Department of the Navy is responsible for the recruitment of civilian and military personnel and for the organization , procurement , equipment , training and mobilization of the Navy and its personnel and material. The ministry also controls the construction, renewal and repair of all ships, aircraft, tools and equipment belonging to the Navy.
