The United States Postmaster General heads the American Federal Post Office .
From 1792 this office had ministerial rank; so the Postmaster General was a member of the federal government. With the Postal Reorganization Act 1971, its federal agency, the United States Post Office Department , was abolished and transferred to the independent federal agency United States Postal Service .
