James William Marshall (politician, 1822)
James William Marshall (* 14. August 1822 in Wilson , Clarke County , Virginia , † 5. February 1910 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), of the Cabinet of President Ulysses S. Grant for a short time held the post of US Post Secretary .
Marshall graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle in 1848 and subsequently remained there as a lecturer. In 1861 he became a full professor of ancient languages at the university . Until 1861 he worked as the head of the department at Dickinson College.
That year he was appointed consul of the United States in Leeds , England , where he remained until 1865. In 1869 Marshall became Deputy Postmaster General under Secretary John A. J. Creswell . After his resignation in June 1874, President Grant nominated Marshall Jewell, who was ambassador to Russia , as his successor. Because his return to America was delayed, James Marshall held the post of post minister as an interim solution between July 3 and Jewell took office on August 24, 1874. He then returned to his role as deputy minister.
Shortly before the end of President Grant's tenure, Marshall took over the management post of the Railway Mail Service . He died in Washington in 1910.
