Joseph Habersham

Joseph Habersham (born July 28, 1751 in Savannah , Province of Georgia , †  November 17, 1815 ) was an American businessman, delegate to the Continental Congress , soldier in the Continental Army and Secretary of the United States.

Career

Joseph Habersham was born in Savannah. He attended private school and Princeton College and became a successful businessman and planter . Habersham was a member of the Security Council and Georgia's Provincial Council in 1775. He was also a major in a battalion in the Georgia Militia and later a colonel in the Continental Army.

In 1785 Habersham, like his younger brother John, took part in the Continental Congress as a delegate from his state; three years later he was a member of the congregation that ratified the United States Constitution for Georgia . He was mayor of Savannah from 1792 to 1793. He then became Minister of Post in the Cabinet of President George Washington in 1795 . He held this office until the beginning of the reign of Thomas Jefferson in 1801. He then served from 1802 until his death in November 1815 as President of the Savannah branch of the Bank of the United States .

legacy

The Habersham County in northeastern Georgia, founded in 1818, has been named in honor Habershams after him, as well as numerous squares and streets throughout the state. His nephew Richard also became a politician and sat for Georgia in the United States House of Representatives from 1839 to 1842 .
