Sofitel is an international luxury - hotel chain . It was founded in Strasbourg in 1964 and has been part of the French Accor group since 1975 . Sofitel owns 131 5-star hotels worldwide .

history

Sofitel was founded on the initiative of the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas  . The first hotel opened in Strasbourg in 1964, and the first international location was added in 1974 with the hotel in Minneapolis . In 1975 Sofitel was bought by the Société d'investissement et d'exploitation hôteliers (SIEH), which has operated under the name Accor since the 1980s and has since been called AccorHotels. From the beginning, Sofitel attached great importance to the technical equipment of their houses, for example by introducing state-of-the-art telephones in the rooms at the end of the 1980s.

In the course of the restructuring of the Accor group of companies in the 1990s, the budget and mid-range hotels from Ibis, Novotel and Co. became more important. At the same time Sofitel moved to the top of the company. The hotel chain developed more and more into a luxury brand. In the 1990s, the media speculated about a sale of Sofitel to an investor, which was ultimately not realized. In order to open up a larger target group, business travelers were increasingly targeted as a target group in addition to private individuals.

As a result of the COVID-19 crisis , Sofitel filed for bankruptcy on July 17, 2020. Sofitel recently had an occupancy rate of only 25%.

Brands

The core of the hotel chain are the five-star Sofitel Hotels & Resorts. Accor describes the houses as an "exclusive liaison of French elegance, local culture and gastronomy". There are currently five Sofitel hotels in Germany, two in Berlin and one each in Hamburg , Frankfurt am Main and Munich . In Austria, the chain is represented with a hotel in Vienna , there is no location in Switzerland.

Under the Sofitel umbrella, Accor launched three more brands: SO Sofitel, Sofitel Legend and MGallery by Sofitel. SO Sofitel is a contemporary lifestyle hotel. On the other hand, Sofitel Legend houses are located in listed buildings of particular historical importance, such as palaces. With MGallery by Sofitel, the hotel chain is active in the field of boutique hotels .
