Donald M. Dickinson
Donald McDonald Dickinson (born January 17, 1846 in Oswego County , New York , † October 15, 1917 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who served as Secretary of the Post Office under President Grover Cleveland .
When Dickinson was two years old, his family moved to Michigan from New York State . He completed his law -Studies at the Law School of the University of Michigan in 1867 and then pursued a successful law firm in Detroit . He tried numerous cases before the Supreme Court .
By 1872 Michigan was a Republican Party dominated state. During this time, Dickinson was very involved in rebuilding the Michigan Democrats. From 1880 to 1885 he was a member of the Democratic National Committee ; while he was one of the supporters of a presidential candidacy from Grover Cleveland early on.
After Cleveland had won the election of 1884 , he offered Donald Dickinson a post on the newly created Commission for the Civil Service , but the latter declined. Not until 1887 did he accept the appointment to the post of Postmaster General , which he took up on January 6, 1888. A little later Dickinson was challenged for the first time when a railroad strike threatened to hinder the delivery of the mail. He refused to use federal troops to violently end the strike; rather, he changed the delivery routes so that the post reached the recipient on time.
After Cleveland's defeat in the 1888 presidential election , Dickinson resigned and returned to work as a lawyer in Detroit. In 1892 he led the Michigan delegation to the Chicago Democratic National Convention , which Grover Cleveland again nominated as a candidate. Four years later, however, he left the party in a dispute over the nomination of William Jennings Bryan as a presidential candidate. In the 1900 presidential election , he supported Republican candidates William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt . He was also on Roosevelt's side in 1912 when he ran for the Progressive Party .
Donald Dickinson died in 1917 and was buried in Detroit. The Dickinson County in Michigan was named after him.
