Megan Jane Brennan (* 1961 ) was the 74th United States Postmaster General from 2015 to 2020 and the first woman to hold this post.

Life

Megan Jane Brennan grew up in Pottsville , Pennsylvania to parents of Irish descent. She attended Nativity BVM High School , a Catholic private school, in her hometown. There she played softball and basketball . With her basketball team, she became a 1978 States Champion.

After graduating from high school in 1980, she studied history at Immaculata College in Philadelphia. In 1984 she got her bachelor's degree.

In 1986 she began her career with the United States Postal Service , where she began as a postman in Lancaster , Pennsylvania. From there she worked her way up to operations manager in Reading and Lehigh Valley , Pennsylvania and district manager in Springfield , Massachusetts .

In 2002 she studied as a Sloan Fellow at MIT , where she earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in a one-year course . With that degree, she was named field director and operations manager of the Northeastern United States, and in 2005 vice president for that area. After she had proven herself there, she became Vice President of the entire East Coast, overseeing an area that included Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky, Jersey, New York and parts of Indiana, among others.

In 2010, she was finally named General Manager and CEO of the US Postal Services. During her service life, among other things, there was a large wave of closings due to the shrinking market and increased pension costs. In doing so, however, she managed to avoid closing rural post offices as best she could.

On November 14, 2014, she was named 74th United States Postmaster General, succeeding Patrick Donahoe in office. She is the first female Postmaster General since the office was established in 1775.
