Reading ( ˈrɛdɪŋ ) is a city in Berks County in the US state of Pennsylvania with 88,082 inhabitants (as of 2010). The city was founded in 1748 and is the county seat of Berks County. Reading was the seat of the railway company Reading Railroad , which began operation in the year 1833rd Reading is a typical industrial city in the north-east of the USA ( Rust Belt ), which has struggled with the problems of structural change over the past few decades . One of the main branches of industry is traditionally the production of pretzels , to which Reading owes the nickname The Pretzel City : To this day there are four pretzel bakeries in the city. The population today consists of 58.2% Hispanics , the majority of whom are from Puerto Rico and who came to the city via New York .

Reading is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, approximately 93 km northwest of the city of Philadelphia . The city is largely bounded to the west by the Schuylkill River , to the east by Mount Penn and to the south by Mount Neversink. The Reading Prong , a mountain formation that is to northern New Jersey extends, is a natural occurrence of the radioactive noble gas radon linked, but the budgets are not affected in Reading in a special way of it.
