Martin Cruz Smith (born November 3, 1942 in Reading , Pennsylvania ; actually William Martin Smith ) is an American writer.

Life

Martin Cruz Smith was born in Reading , Pennsylvania in 1942 to a jazz musician and an Indian woman.

He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania , graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964, and worked as a journalist from 1965 to 1969 before starting writing. In the 1970s he also published his novels under pseudonyms such as Nick Carter, Martin Quinn, Simon Quinn and Martin Smith. The series about Moscow investigator Arkadi Renko made him famous, whose first volume Gorky Park (1981) became a worldwide bestseller, was awarded the Gold Dagger in the USA and was made into a film in 1983 .

Under the community pseudonym Jake Logan , he wrote two of the well over 300 volumes in the western novel series Slocum in the early 1970s ; also for the series of around 260 volumes on the spy Nick Carter .

He lives with his family in San Rafael , California .
