San Rafael is a city in Marin County in the US state of California , United States . It is the seat of the county seat of Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area , about 25 kilometers (as the crow flies) north-northwest of San Francisco .

From San Rafael, the almost nine kilometers long Richmond – San Rafael Bridge leads east across San Francisco Bay to Richmond . Interstate 580 runs over the bridge . Interstate 101 runs through the city from north to south .

history

San Rafael was built on the site of the San Rafael Arcángel Mission , which was founded in 1817 by a Spanish priest.

In 1890, the Dominican College was founded in San Rafael , a Roman Catholic educational institution run by Dominican women and initially reserved for female students only. It is one of the oldest higher education institutions in California. Co-education was introduced in 1971, and in 2000 the college became the Dominican University of California .
