Terry Notary (born August 14, 1968 in San Rafael , California ) is an American actor , stunt performer and movement choreographer .

life and career

Terry Notary is from California. At the age of 7, his parents enrolled him in gymnastics to curb his hyperactivity. He won a gymnastics scholarship to UCLA and later graduated with a Masters in Theater . Then notary worked for the Cirque du Soleil . For his film The Grinch , director Ron Howard was looking for circus performers who should bring the actors closer to movement sequences. Impressed by Notary, he opted for the latter.

As a result, James Cameron engaged him for his hit film Avatar - Departure for Pandora to design the movement patterns of the Na'vi people . After that he was won over by Peter Jackson for the Hobbit trilogy . He designed the movement patterns for the peoples of the Elves, Dwarfs and Orcs and also took on stunt and orc extras. He also took on these activities in Warcraft: The Beginning , Suicide Squad or BFG - Big Friendly Giant .

His acting roles are mostly limited to supporting roles, which are often brought to life by means of motion capture processes. So he played u. a. in Planet of the Apes: Prevolution and in the following parts Planet of the Apes: Revolution and Planet of the Apes: Survival the Chimpanzee Rocket . In 2017 he served the giant ape Kong in Kong: Skull Island as a movement model. He also took part in The Square by the Swede Ruben Östlund , in the role of Oleg, who behaves like a monkey. In 2018 he took on the role of the Black Order trailer Cull Obsidian in the film Avengers: Infinity War and also acted as a movement model for the role of Groot, whom Vin Diesel once again lent the voice. In 2019 he developed the movement patterns for the animals in the film The Lion King by director Jon Favreau .

In the stunt area, he is used both actively and coordinatively or in planning. Alongside Andy Serkis , he is considered one of the best monkey impersonators in the film business. Notary lives in Los Angeles with his wife .
