action

The intelligent Reed Richards was already engaged in teleportation as a child. Discovered by Prof. Franklin Storm, Reed joins a team from the Baxter Foundation, which is partially funded by the US military. There Reed Franklin meets Storm's children Susan and Johnny. Together they work on the Quantum Gate , which was developed by a former protégé of Franklin Storm named Victor von Doom, who returns a little later.

With Reed's help, the teleporter is completed which connects to a new world. However, the military under Dr. Send everyone their own team and deny the developers use. Reed, Johnny, Victor go through the gate without permission, along with Reed's school friend Ben Grimm. Arrived on Planet Zero , Victor tries to take soil samples, but this leads to a lava eruption and the apparent death of Victor. The remaining three save themselves back to earth through the Quantum Gate with the help of Susan. An explosion changes the travelers on a molecular level through substances from Planet Zero: Reed becomes extremely elastic, Susan gains the ability to make herself invisible and create force fields, her younger brother Johnny can control fire, ignite himself and in this way also fly and Ben becomes a muscle man. Reed sees himself responsible for the disaster and flees the facility to find a cure for himself and his friends while they work for the military.

A year later, Reed is captured by Ben in Central America and taken to Area 57 , where Dr. Everyone wants to re-establish access to planet Zero with the help of Reed. A team from Dr. Allen's men travels through the gate and finds Victor von Doom, who has fused into his protective suit and has also developed extraordinary powers. He is brought back to Earth, but escapes and kills Dr. Allen and Prof. Storm. Marked by his time on Planet Zero and his hatred of people, Doom decides to destroy the earth. To do this, he travels back to Planet Zero, where he has built a huge teleporter that is activated and begins to consume the earth. Reed and the others have followed Doom back and put him to fight. Eventually, Doom is defeated by being thrown into the energy beam of his teleporter, where he dissolves.

Back on earth, the four are celebrated and rewarded by the military with a new base. They decide to use their powers for humanity and call themselves the Fantastic Four .

background

The film is not based on the classic adventures of the Fantastic Four, but on a reinterpretation by the team from the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic series , which was released between 2004 and 2009. In it, the protagonists are much younger and do not get their strength from a space flight, but from a journey into another dimension.

Miles Teller , who played Jason in Rabbit Hole alongside Nicole Kidman, played Reed Richards. Michael B. Jordan , who showed the last 24 hours of Oscar Grant in Next Stop: Fruitvale Station , took on the role of Johnny Storm.

Reviews

The announcement of the cast of the leading roles sparked heated discussions because Johnny Storm was cast with the African American Michael B. Jordan and Das Ding with the approximately 1.70 m tall Jamie Bell and this is considered inappropriate by comic book fans. Director Josh Trank countered that fans, comic book makers and filmmakers should be open to new interpretations. In April 2015, the four main actors received the CinemaCon Ensemble Award from the Association of American Cinema Operators NATO .

Gregor Wossilus from Kino Kino called the film a “fantastic fail”. The film is certainly ambitious, but completely inconsistent. He never found the right tone: “In terms of content, the film takes far too long before the superhero action finally starts. It gets really disturbing when the villain Doom finally returns to earth and bursts heads. This visual violence does not want to fit into the Marvel cinema cosmos, which is always winking. "Last but not least, the film struggles with its timing:" Before that, always splashing with the handbrake on, the film practically rushes through the final fight against Doom, in which the friends finally welded Mature superhero clique. "

Also Dietmar Dath gave the film a devastating critique:

“... So the film is rightly, as you learn, a catastrophic commercial bugger, which, in addition to being at least spectacularly big bullshit, lacks what a film based on the comic of the same name by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby should have in order to Art of doing justice to these two at least in failure: size. "

- Dietmar Dath

Gross profit

On the first cinema weekend, Fantastic Four grossed around $ 60 million worldwide. In particular, the US earnings for the first weekend of just $ 26 million were disappointing for a blockbuster of this size. With such low grossing on the first weekend, the film, whose production and marketing budget is estimated to be over $ 200 million, is considered a flop . The Hollywood Reporter estimates the losses at $ 80 to 100 million.

Sequels

Fantastic Four retells the story of Fantastischen Vier and is therefore not a continuation of the films Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). 20th Century Fox had originally planned to initiate a restart of the Fantastic Four film series with the remake. However, due to the economic failure of Fantastic Four , the sequel originally scheduled for June 9, 2017, was canceled.
