The Fantastic Four with New Adventures (OT: Fantastic Four ) is the third animated series based on the Marvel Comics series The Fantastic Four . It aired from September 24, 1994 to February 24, 1996 in the United States on The Marvel Action Hour , which aired on various television channels. The series had two seasons with 13 episodes each. In Germany, the series was broadcast from June 1, 1997 in the Saturday children's program on the private broadcaster RTL Television .

background

In the early 1990s, Marvel Productions released a new series for Fantastic Four as part of The Marvel Action Hour and marketed it on various channels. The first half of the hour aired The Invincible Iron Man , the second half was reserved for the Fantastic Four. In the first season Stan Lee , head of Marvel and inventor of the two series appeared, introduced the characters of the respective series and explained what inspired him to these.

The first season was very expensive due to the expensive but outdated animations by Wang Film Productions and Kennedy Cartoons . Attempts at humor by including a meticulous British landlady (dubbed Stan Lee's wife Joan ) were found annoying by fans. Comic book artist Tom DeFalco got into trouble at Marvel when he targeted the series by having superhero Ant-Man watch an episode of the series on a strip in Fantastic Four # 396 and he was amused by the poor quality of the series.

Both the Fantastischen Vier and Iron Man have been fundamentally revised for the second seasons. The animations were now taken over by the Philippine Animation Studio, Inc. The newly hired supervising producer Tom Tataranowicz (including Biker Mice from Mars ) had the stories implemented in a more demanding and less child-friendly manner. There were therefore fewer introductions from Stan Lee. In addition, the Baxter Building (the home of the Fantastic Four) was destroyed in the first episode and had to give way to the Four Freedoms Plaza. The stories were now based on the new Fantastic Four Comics from the 1980s written by John Byrne and the drawing style of John Buscema . A new, instrumental intro replaced the title song, which stuck with many fans as a catchy tune due to its strange, incorrect lyrics and its catchiness .

action

season 1

Most of the first season episodes are retellings and reinterpretations of the 1960s comic book editions of Fantastic Four, which were invented by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby . Most of the episodes were based on the original. There was a two-part series about Galactus and its herald Silver Surfer , which was closely based on The Galactus Trilogy .

In the double episode Marionettes of Evil , the genesis of the Fantastischen Vier is rolled out again. Then the Puppet Master takes control of the thing and uses it to catch the invisible. Mister Fantastic frees the thing and defeats the Puppet Master. When the Puppet Master returns to take his own doll from his stepdaughter Alicia Masters , he falls out of the window in a fight and appears to be dead. But the Fantastic Four cannot find his body. The blind Alicia Masters becomes the thing's girlfriend.

In the double episode The Messenger from a Distant World , Silver Surfer, Firelord and Terrax fight the Fantastic Four, while their master Galactus tries to devour the earth. In the end, the silver surfer turns against his master and is violated.

The three-part series “On behalf of Dr. Doom ”is about Doctor Doom holding the Fantastic Four captive and forcing them to travel in time and bring them a certain object. In a subplot, Doctor Doom tells the story of how it came about. The season ends with the episode "The Return of the Silver Surfer", in which Doctor Doom steals the powers of the Silver Surfer in order to subjugate the earth.

season 2

In the first episode of the second season "The Island of Dr. Doom ”, Doctor Doom robs the four of their powers. However, with the help of Daredevil , they can get them back. The thing is very angry at having to go back to his monstrous appearance and crushes Doctor Doom's hand. This later returns in "Nightmare in Green" and manipulates the Hulk to attack the Fantastic Four.

A three episode spanning story tells the creation of the super villain group The Fearful Four . The Inhumans also appear for the first time in the three-part series . Crystal then becomes the friend of the Human Torch, but separated from him by a barrier. In the rest of the season the torch suffers from lovesickness, which is discussed again and again.

In “The Black Panther's Prey”, the superhero Black Panther lures the Fantastischen Vier to the land of Wakanda, who support him in his fight against Klaw.

In the episode "Ego, the Living Planet", the Fantastic Four and Thor Galactus Ego help fight the living planet. Both Galactus and Thor also appear in the episode "Battle of the Giants". In addition to Thor, Ghost Rider can also be seen. A continuity error can be found here, the Terrax, already known from the first season, is introduced as the new Herald of Galactus.

Franklin Storm, the father of Johnny and Susanne Storm, plays in the episode "Revenge for Dr. Storm ”with. As in the comics, he's a wanted man who lost his wife in an accident and accidentally killed a debt collector in an altercation. After Sue was attacked by a Skrull and seriously injured, he came out of hiding and rescued his daughter. Then he was arrested. But Super-Skrull imitates Franklin Storm and runs amok in the city. However, the Fantastic Four can stop the alien. However, Storm was killed by Warlord Morrat in the same episode when he tried to warn the Fantastic Four of a trap.

In the episode "Back to the Past" the human torch, Impossible Man and the super dog Lockjaw fight against super Skrull. The episode is a look back at the second season.

The Inhumans can free themselves from the barrier in episode 12 "The Journey to Tivu". Crystal returns to the human torch. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the Fantastischen Vier fight against a Sentry-459, a super robot that guards a Pacific island.

In the finale, “The Dr. Doom “Doctor Doom can steal the powers of the silver surfer for the second time and establishes a reign of terror on earth. However, the Fantastic Four can stop him with the help of Galactus' barrier.

season 3

According to producer Tom Tataranowicz, there should have been a third season of the series. He would have liked to tell the stories of Sue Storm's pregnancy. In his view, this would have given the crew a chance to come up with a new version of Prince Namor (who only appeared in Season 1) as he played a huge role in the story. Tataranowicz also wanted to add Medusa and She-Hulk as members of the Fantastic Four (She-Hulk replaced Das Ding as part of the Secret Wars storyline, while Medusa replaced pregnant Sue Richards).

Crossover

There were connections to the series New Spider-Man (1994) and The Incredible Hulk (1996) from the same period . The episodes 61–63 of New Spider-Man tell the story of the Secret Wars , which already linked the various series in the comic book series. The Fantastic Four support Spider-Man in a test to determine whether the good or bad side of his personality wins.

In episode 8 of the Hulk animated series, Bruce Banner and She-Hulk go to the Fantastic Four so that Mr. Fantastic Banner can free his load. However, all but the thing are on vacation. The three fight against Ogress and Gamma Warriors.

DVD release

After the movie Fantastic Four hit theaters in 2005 , The Walt Disney Company (via Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment) released the series on DVD on July 5 of the same year. The DVD set contained new moderators from Stan Lee who introduced the 26 episodes. Some episodes were cut because they were based on an already cut broadcast and so some scenes were missing. Several uncut DVDs followed, however. In April 2009 a German-language edition of the two relay boxes was published.

Episode list

RTL Television broadcast the series from June 1, 1997 in the Saturday morning program. The exact dates of the first broadcast, some of which had a different order than the US broadcast, are unfortunately not available.
