history

Cosplayer as Ant-Man with his typical helmet

The role of Ant-Man in the comics was played by four different people.

Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym is a biophysicist who discovered a chemical substance that allows him to vary his size ( Tales to Astonish # 7, 1962). The draftsmen designed him with a red superhero costume with a striking silver helmet. It contains antennas and a mouthpiece that he can use to communicate telepathically and verbally with ants. In later editions it was stated that the chemical substance contained so-called Pym particles , fictitious subatomic elementary particles that are connected to another dimension. With this discovery, Pym started a superhero career, first as Ant-Man (in a shrunken form) and later as Giant-Man , Goliath and Yellowjacket . He is also known by the alias Dr. Pym, the Scientific Adventurer .

Pym and his future wife, Janet van Dyne , became founding members of the Avengers , but a series of self-doubts and consequent serious mistakes - including the creation of the almost invincible robot Ultron - left Pym for a time from the ranks of the Avengers. He later became a mainstay of the West Coast Avengers and later founded the Avengers Academy in his old identity as Giant-Man after a traumatic time travel experience led him to believe that it was his duty to help the young recruits before a life as a supervillain to preserve.

Pym left the identity of the Ant-Man to former thief and electrical engineer Scott Lang , who once stole the suit to help his terminally ill daughter Cassandra "Cassie" Lang and has since become a valued member of the Marvel superhero world. Lang debuted in the comics The Avengers # 181 (1979) and Marvel Premiere # 47 (1979).

The third Ant-Man was Chris McCarthy . It was created by Robert Kirkman and Phil Hester and made his first appearance in Irredeemable Ant-Man # 1 (December 2006). McCarthy was previously an agent of SHIELD. He was assigned with Eric O'Grady to help Dr. Protect Hank Pym's lab. When Pym wants to leave the laboratory, Eric O'Grady knocks him out. Both then find the Ant-Man suit, which Chris McCarthy tries out and shrinks to the size of an ants. In an attack by Hydra, McCarthy is later killed and the suit goes to his friend and colleague O'Grady.

Eric O'Grady is the fourth Ant-Man. O'Grady is also an agent of SHIELD O'Grady eventually takes the suit to carry out his own plans. He later becomes a member of Avengers: The Initiative and then the Thunderbolts . As a member of the Secret Avengers , he dies in a fight against the super villain Father.
