action

In 1989: The physicist Henry "Hank" Pym , who works at SHIELD , discovered the Pym particles named after him, which enable the contraction of atomic spaces. When he discovers that SHIELD is trying to replicate his greatest discovery, he furiously quits the service and starts his own company. However, his former assistant Darren Cross and his daughter Hope, who has become estranged from him since their mother's death, force him to retire from the company's management. Since then, Cross has tried to rediscover the Pym particles in order to market the “ Yellowjacket ” combat suit he developed as a new weapon system for shrinking soldiers.

San Francisco Today: Scott Lang , an electrical engineer, is released from prison after serving a long sentence for breaking into a highly secure company. He stays with his former cellmate and friend Luis, but his criminal record denies him the chance of an honest new start. His ex-wife Maggie and her new fiancé, the policeman Paxton, refuse Scott any contact with his young daughter Cassie because he does not pay child support. In desperation, Scott accepts Luis 'proposal to break into an old man's house, which - according to Luis' information - is attracting lucrative prey. But in the house safe, Scott does not find any valuables, but something that looks like an old motorcycle suit. He takes him with him, not realizing that the owner of the property - Pym - was watching him the whole time.

The next morning, Scott examines the suit, dons it on a trial basis and activates a function that suddenly shrinks it to the size of an insect. Traumatized by the subsequent odyssey through a world that seems oversized to him, he brings the suit back, but is arrested by the police immediately afterwards. Pym visits him in prison and offers him the chance to rehabilitate himself in the eyes of his daughter. Scott accepts the offer and escapes from the cell with the shrink suit and the help of some ants. He finds accommodation with Pym and Hope, who are hesitantly trying to reconcile. From them, Scott learns that Pym arranged for the suit to be stolen to test Scott. Pym plans to sabotage Cross' Yellowjacket project to prevent his invention from being turned into a weapon. To this end, Scott is supposed to use the shrink suit and another invention by Pym, which enables him to communicate with ants, to penetrate the building of Cross Technological Enterprises and destroy all elements of the weapons project there. Along the way, Scott and Hope learn that Pym once used his particles himself to appear as a superhero with his wife Janet as his partner Wasp . This ended, however, after Janet one day had to shrink to subatomic size to stop a nuclear missile and went missing in the process.

The suit exhibited at the D23 Expo

The Pyms familiarize Scott with the use of the suit and teach him to communicate with ants, who should support him with their special skills in the project. To get a jamming module necessary for the plan, Scott breaks into the new headquarters of the Avengers and has to face Falcon in a duel before he can escape with the module. Just before Scott and the Pyms start the sabotage project, Cross is able to perfect his shrink technology. Since he suspects his former mentor, he has the security measures in his factory reinforced. Scott then lets Luis and his friends Dave and Kurt know about the plan. Although Paxton is on them, they can bypass the security measures and smuggle Scott into the laboratory, where Cross, in the presence of Pym and Hope, presents the completed Yellowjacket combat suit to his buyers, including HYDRA . Scott falls into Cross' trap, who now confidently reveals his plans. Scott can save himself and the Pyms and destroy Cross Tech with shrink charges. He pursues Cross, who escapes by helicopter and shrinks with the yellowjacket. In the ensuing duel, Scott manages to incapacitate Cross, but then he is taspered by Paxton and arrested.

While Scott is being taken to the police station, Cross regains consciousness and breaks into Paxton's house, where he takes Cassie hostage. Scott escapes from the police car and there is another fight in Cassie's nursery. Just before Cross can kill Cassie and Paxton, Scott turns off the regulator on his suit and, like Wasp once did, shrinks to subatomic size to get to the circuitry of Cross's suit. Scott's sabotage causes Cross to shrink uncontrollably and die. Scott is thrown into subatomic space, but can save himself from this fatal situation by inserting a magnifying capsule into his regulator. After the successful mission, Scott visits his daughter and their new family. Paxton expresses his sincere respect and reveals that he has removed the incriminating evidence against Scott. Luis calls and informs Scott that Falcon is looking for him.

In a mid-credit scene, Pym shows his daughter the unfinished prototype for a new Wasp costume that he and his wife have been working on, as a sign that he is finally ready to let Hope inherit her mother. In a subsequent post-credit scene, Falcon proposes to his friend Steve Rogers that Scott join the ranks of the Avengers in their current situation .

Reviews

The reactions after a first press screening were promising. One day after the cinema launch in the United States and its premiere in Austria, Ant-Man was positively rated by 80% of the 258 critics at Rotten Tomatoes , with an average of 4.1 out of 5 points (as of 16 January 2016). The critics (43) of Metacritic gave it 6.4 out of 10 points, the audience (264 visitors) 8.2 out of 10 points (as of July 21, 2015).

In the opinion of many critics, playing with the proportions offers new possibilities for entertaining action and adds a good dose of humor to the films in the Marvel universe, because Ant-Man does not take himself so seriously, the protagonist was designed by the scriptwriters as a self-deprecating character and the cast with Paul Rudd, who is known for the comedy industry, in the title role ensures a corresponding ease. Christoph Petersen from filmstarts.de therefore also praises: “'Ant-Man' is not the greatest, but it is the most creatively staged of all Marvel films to date.” Frank Arnold from epd also focuses on just a few Marvel characters film is something positive, and he describes Ant-Man as "a straightforward story with a manageable staff and a limited number of locations." Even if the makers of the film now turn to a new character with Ant-Man , focus.de judges : “Marvel's littlest superhero is great entertainment - but nothing that has not been seen in previous Marvel films. [...] Ultimately, the film suffers from the fate that all superhero flicks have at the great moment of comic book adaptations: It has to compete with many previous films. And compared to the force of 'The Avengers', the glossy finish of 'Iron Man' or the fun of 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Ant-Man' doesn't offer any big surprises. He remains just a small piece of the puzzle in the great Marvel universe. But one that entertains you damn well for two hours. "

Gross profit

On the first weekend after its theatrical release in the United States, Canada, Australia and a number of other countries, Ant-Man grossed almost $ 114 million, including $ 57.2 million in North America. Contrary to all expectations, Ant-Man reached number 1 on the US box office and started more than satisfactorily. In the second week, the film also ranked first here. On July 22, 2015 , Ant-Man had recouped the production costs of 130 million US dollars just five days after its theatrical release. By the end of November 2015, Ant-Man grossed over US $ 518 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful films of 2015 .

Awards

The two main actors Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly received nominations in the categories Summer Movie Star: Male and Summer Movie Star: Female at the Teen Choice Awards 2015 . As part of the 66th Eddie Awards, the film was nominated on January 4, 2016 by the Association of American Cinema Editors in the category Best Film Editing - Comedy or Musical . As part of the Saturn Award ceremony in 2016 , the film was recognized as the best comic adaptation . Peyton Reed was also nominated for Best Director , Paul Rudd for Best Actor, and Evangeline Lilly for Best Supporting Actress. Paul Rudd was under the MTV Movie Awards 2016 as Best Film Hero nominated.

Recovery information

The comic book adaptation, produced by Marvel Entertainment, is distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. As a result of a contract between Disney and IMAX, Ant-Man was filmed in IMAX format.

continuation

In July 2015, producer Kevin Feige confirmed that the studio had "a super cool idea for the next Ant-Man movie," and they would find a way to make it happen if the audience wanted. Director Peyton Reed mentioned conversations about a possible stand-alone adventure with Pym as Ant-Man , which, according to Cinema Blend's Eric Eisenberg , would open up a great opportunity to revive the Marvel short film franchise. At the end of July 2015, actor David Dastmalchian also declared his willingness to participate in a sequel again.

In a post-credit scene in the film, a continuation of the story of Ant-Man is hinted at and that he may play an important role in the future Marvel universe. Ant-Man starred in The First Avenger: Civil War in 2016.

In October 2015, Walt Disney Pictures officially announced a sequel called Ant-Man and the Wasp . This started in US cinemas on July 6, 2018.
