action

New York-based, 15-year-old Peter Parker, like best friend Ned, is an outsider at New York's Midtown High School. One of the few bright spots at his school is his secret crush Liz, the president of the academic decathlon team there, of which Peter is also a member. Peter finds it difficult to concentrate on the lessons and his previous hobbies because he is always thinking about what is going on in Germany and watching scenes of the fight on his laptop. After taking action against Captain America's unruly Avengers as Spider-Man alongside Tony Stark as Iron Man at Leipzig-Halle Airport , Tony left him a new high-tech Spider-Man suit, the many functions of which Peter must gradually discover . In his spare time he continues to work as a superhero, but he wants to do more than just stop petty criminals here and there. Tony does not want to make him an official member of the Avengers just yet, but Peter asks Happy, Tony's chief security officer, almost every day if he is needed for any mission, and is always ready for a possible callback, including his attention in class and his hobbies suffer. Ned eventually finds out that Peter leads a double life as a superhero and becomes his partner.

When Peter prevents a robbery on a bank's ATM, which uses technologically advanced equipment, a new villain appears in the unscrupulous arms dealer Adrian Toomes . Eight years earlier, as the owner of a private salvage company, he had participated in the clean-up work that had become necessary due to the Chitauri attack on New York . When the US government forbade him to carry out further salvage operations, he decided to use the Chitauri technology he had already recovered to build a flight suit and high-tech weapons for the black market because of the resulting financial losses. Because Peter cannot convince Happy or his mentor Tony of the danger posed by Toomes, he hunts him down on his own, because he finally senses his chance to prove himself as a superhero. Peter later disrupts a gun deal between Jackson Brice and Herman Schultz, who are Toomes' people, and petty criminal Aaron Davis . When Toomes takes him by surprise, Iron Man must step in to save him and warns Peter not to pursue the matter further. On this occasion, however, a piece of Chitauri technology comes into Peter's hands, and together with Ned he tries to discover the secret of the energy core inside. When the two of them tinker with Peter's suit, they deactivate the "child safety lock" and activate a number of additional functions, including artificial intelligence .

When the decathlon team drives to Washington for a competition and Ned takes the Chitauri module with him to the Washington Monument, it is accidentally activated and damages the building with an enormous discharge of energy, so that the team threatens to crash with the elevator, which is also damaged as a result Peter, as Spider-Man, can save everyone at the last moment. Peter learns from Davis that Toomes and some of his people are on the Staten Island Ferry selling guns to a certain Mac Gargan . While trying to capture her there, the FBI shows up and the ferry is badly damaged and almost sunk. Iron Man has to intervene again to prevent a catastrophe and takes Peter off the Spider-Man suit as punishment for his recklessness.

When the big homecoming ball is coming up, Peter offers Liz to accompany her there, and she agrees. When Peter wants to pick her up at home, her father opens the door - to Peter's horror Adrian Toomes. On the way to the ball, Toomes also realizes that Peter is Spider-Man, but because Peter saved his daughter's life in Washington, he spares him, not without warning him not to get in his way again in his gun deals. otherwise he will kill Peter and everyone who is important to him. Peter, still frozen in shock, agrees, but still clings to Toomes' heels unnoticed and can prevent him from robbing an aircraft that is supposed to bring state-of-the-art weapons from Stark Industries to the new Avengers headquarters. Toomes survived the plane crash, but his damaged flight suit exploded while attempting to escape with a crate of cargo. Peter saves him from the fire and delivers him to the police. Tony invites Peter to join the Avengers because of his performance, but Peter refuses for the time being. On arrival at home, Peter discovers the Spider-Man suit that Tony had previously taken from him in a bag on his bed. He puts it on immediately, and when he takes off his mask in his room with the door open, Aunt May watches the action and is beside herself.

In the mid-credit scene, Toomes meets his former buyer Mac Gargan in prison, who has a few friends who want revenge on Spider-Man. He's also heard a rumor that Toomes knows Spider-Man's true identity. Toomes denies this. In the post-credit scene, Captain America shows up and talks about patience.

production

Production history

After the official title became known, it was speculated whether it might be a cinematic adaptation of The Amazing Spider-Man issue No. 252 from 1984, which bears the same title and in which the black costume of Spider-Man was introduced. The costume also laid the foundation for the later introduced alien parasite that spawned Venom .

According to experts, Sony and Marvel in the film are about establishing the new Spider-Man as an independent hero, after he was introduced in the previous films as a minor character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Since Sony Pictures still owns the film rights for the character Spider-Man , but the film is being produced jointly with Marvel Studios , because they have been more successful in making films with Marvel characters in previous years, critics feared that Sony would be able to have a lot of influence on the film. At a press conference for the film Captain America: Civil War in April 2016, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, said that Marvel would make the creative decisions about the planned distribution of tasks between the two studios involved. In July 2016, Feige announced that Marvel wanted to orient itself towards Harry Potter in the remake of the Spider-Man series , because his life path was comparable to that of Peter Parker. Homecoming , the subtitle of the film, alludes to a festival tradition at the title character's high school. Jörg Wunder from Tagesspiegel also recognizes a subtext in it: “Although Sony had a happier hand with its spider men than the competition from Fox with the Fantastic Four , it was agreed that the films that Sony would continue to distribute would be produced by Marvel and thus the comic icon to literally return home to the place in the MCU that the fans demanded. "

References to the comics and previous films

The character of Spider-Man had already been reintroduced to the Avengers in the movie The First Avenger: Civil War in a scene that was widely acclaimed by critics, in which Peter Parker is visited by Tony Stark in his apartment in Queens and urged by him to to get a feeling for who he is and why he actually swings through New York every evening. As a result of this conversation, the highly intelligent teenager with little experience in social matters becomes a true superhero with ideals, which explains the basic idea behind the character very well.

Initially, Peter Parker has little interest in being a hero. In the new edition, it is Stark who motivates Peter Parker to join the Avengers and come to Germany with him to use his special skills against what appears to be evil. By reminding him in the film that when you have the power and bad things happen and you do nothing to stop them, then these bad things happen because of you , he took on the mentoring function that his uncle Ben fulfilled in the comics and previous films, who had explained to him: Great power also gives rise to great responsibility. So it is still neither nobility nor vengeance, but the bad conscience that moves Spider-Man to his heroic deeds in the new edition. At the end of the film, as an introduction to the new Spider-Man edition, a post-credit scene showed how Spider-Man had to answer his aunt May's questions about the injuries he had suffered in Leipzig, while at the same time being happy about the new equipment that Stark left him.

The introduction of Spider-Man into the Avengers series, according to screenwriter Stephen McFeely , was due to the fact that this hero was not only fans of the comic books, but also most of the moviegoers, through the previous Spider-Man films is known, which has the advantage that you no longer have to explain how he got his superpowers, and allow the scriptwriters to introduce the protagonist in the film without having to waste too much time on the background story and character development.

The goal of the new edition was that a young generation should grow up with this new Spider-Man like the millennials grew up with Harry Potter . In contrast to the previous films, Peter Parker's story is deliberately anchored in his life as a high school student in the new edition. Producer Eric Hauserman explains that Peter is a real teenage boy: “He has his cell phone, takes selfies and videos wherever he goes. What children do. ”In contrast to the previous Spider-Man films, Peter Parker is getting quite a technical upgrade for the first time, which Tony Stark has given him and which, according to Hauserman, has an Iron Man technology level, including a high-tech vision system , Webwings and a parachute.

Staff and cast

In the summer of 2015 it was announced that Jon Watts would be directing the film. Kevin Feige said of the election that Marvel was very fond of their Cop Car movie . The transfer of directing to Watts, who previously worked mainly for short films and TV series in this role, also corresponded to the now common practice of engaging aspiring but not necessarily experienced directors for superhero films. In addition to Watts, Christopher Ford , Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers , but also John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein were involved in the development of the script, who had previously worked as a writing duo on the film Vacation - We Are the Griswolds .

Zendaya Coleman plays Peter's classmate, Michelle
Tom Holland took on the role of
Spider-Man in the film

In June 2015 it was announced that the main role in the film and also a supporting role in The First Avenger: Civil War , the introductory film for the new Spider-Man , would be cast with actor Tom Holland . Anthony Russo , one of the directors of the previous film, commented on the cast: We are showing a very young Spider-Man, because we have the impression that his youth gives him a certain uniqueness in the Marvel universe. So we wanted to cast a very young actor. The Spider-Man character has always been a big favorite of the Russo brothers in the Marvel films. In May 2015, Asa Butterfield , Judah Lewis , Matthew Lintz , Charlie Plummer and Charlie Rowe were among the last six candidates and were thus shortlisted for this role.

Although Spider-Man was only shown for about 10 minutes in The First Avenger: Civil War and had a special position as a superhero with secret identity, which made him fit only partially into the circle of the Avengers, the acting performance of Holland after the premiere of Films received numerous praise and the actor was welcomed as the new Spider-Man . After many fans had not previously requested any further Spider-Man films, Holland had the predecessors Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield forgotten and also met the expectations of the readers of the comic books. Especially because of his youthful charisma and his impressive movements, which his experiences as a gymnast and acrobat showed, Holland is moving closer to the Spider-Man comic books, as especially his flip when the figure shows and also many of the stunts that the actor himself performed in The First Avenger: Civil War . Even Tobey Maguire , who himself, the figure had led to new fame since 2002, congratulated Holland after its introduction into the MCU and was impressed by the new Spider-Man . While Maguire began his Spider-Man role at the age of 27 and Andrew Garfield was even close to his 30th birthday, Holland was just 19 years old when he first appeared as Peter Parker, which the British actor in the eyes make the director the ideal superhero: “He's a great Spider-Man. He has exactly the attitude we need, the perfect physical conditions, but also an innocence and excitement paired with a certain New York coolness. That's great! ”According to their own statements, Holland is under contract in this role for a total of six appearances.

Robert Downey Jr. takes on the role of
Iron Man again in the film
Tony Revolori plays Thompson in the movie Flash

The cast of Aunt May with the American actress Marisa Tomei , born in 1964, became known in July 2015. The cast of this role with a significantly younger person than shown in the comics and in earlier Spider-Man films had also already been taken up in The First Avenger: Civil War , where it was described as surprisingly attractive by the character of Tony Stark in the film has been. Tony Revolori will take on the role of Flash Thompson, the top athlete from Peter's school, who often gets him into trouble. Zendaya Coleman will star in the role of Michelle, another of Peter's classmates .

In April 2016 it became known that Robert Downey Jr. should be seen in the film as Iron Man . It's the eighth time Downey has taken on this role. For a total of three days of shooting, he is said to have received a fee of 15 million US dollars. Also in April 2016, rumors surfaced that Michael Keaton , who starred in the role of Batman in the 1989 film of the same name , could potentially return to a superhero film. It was not officially confirmed until the Comic-Con in July 2016 that Keaton would take on the role of Adrian Toomes or The Vulture in the film . It will be the first time that The Vulture has appeared in a live action.

In May 2016, a casting call was made in which an agency was looking for 15 to 17-year-olds, but also some older girls and boys, to take on the roles of high school students in the film. The search for actors of Asian and Indian descent was particularly focused. The call was made for the project The Summer of George , which is the code name of the new Spider-Man film.

Laura Harrier plays Peter's secret love, Liz Allan
Jacob Batalon plays Peter's best friend, Ned Leeds

In June 2016 it was announced that Martin Starr , Logan Marshall-Green and Kenneth Choi would take on additional roles in the film. Choi will play the principal of the school in the film. At the end of June 2016 it was announced that Mike Milligan will also play a villain in the film, after Keaton and Marshall-Green, making him the third opponent of Spider-Man. Donald Glover joined the crew around the same time . The comedian and musician can be seen in the film in the role of Aaron Davis, a petty criminal and burglar who is a customer of Vulture. Shortly thereafter, Michael Mando and Abraham Attah were confirmed as new additions. In late June 2016, it was announced that Tyne Daly would play a role in the film and that Bokeem Woodbine would play the role of yet another villain. Woodbine's role is that of Herman Shultz aka Shocker , a super villain who first appeared in 1967 in The Amazing Spider-Man number 46 and has worked repeatedly with The Vulture in the comics . Shocker is a talented safe cracker and burglar expert who designed a costume that can fire compressed air shock waves. This figure was also created by Stan Lee, together with John Romita. It was later revealed that the role of Peter's best friend, Ned Leeds, had been cast with Jacob Batalon . In Marvel Comics , Ned is a reporter for the Daily Bugle , a New York newspaper. Laura Harrier also took on a bigger role as Liz Allan, with whom Peter is secretly in love. Spider-Man creator Stan Lee can be seen in the film in a cameo as a New York citizen complaining about the noise Peter Parker is making in the street.

At the end of July 2016, Martha Kelly , and UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at the beginning of August 2016, joined the crew. Also at the beginning of August 2016, the cast of The Tinkerer with Michael Chernus became known and thus another villain. The Tinkerer's real name is Phineas Mason, and he is a former Stark Industries employee who was personally fired by Tony Stark several years earlier. As an employee of Vulture, he developed a glider for this and examined the recovered alien technology. With Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, two other actors take on roles in the film, in which they have already starred alongside Downey in the films Iron Man , Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 , which in Spider-Man: Homecoming another connection to the Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is established. In addition, Chris Evans can be seen throughout the film in video sequences in the role of Captain America, who are played to schoolchildren, for example in physical education or detention, and who have an educational assignment.

In the end credits scene, Toomes meets Mac Gargan, played by Michael Mando and imprisoned there, in prison, against whom Peter had to fight on the Staten Island Ferry. Mac Gargan is a comic book detective hired by J. Jonah Jameson, the boss of the Daily Bugle . As can also be found in the cartoon series, its DNA has also been changed and mixed with that of a scorpion, which is why he, acting as the villain Scorpion, is equipped with superhuman abilities that are similar to those of Spider-Man. In Spider-Man: Homecoming , Mac Gargan only shares the name with Scorpion so far.

Filming

At the end of September 2016, the film was shot in the Astoria district of New York

Filming began in June 2016 at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta , Georgia. Also in June 2016, recordings were made at the Henry W. Grady High School near Piedmont Park in Atlanta. The last filming took place in New York at the end of September 2016 , including on Astoria Boulevard in the Astoria district in northwest Queens and around a New York City Subway station located there . Shooting ended on October 2nd, 2016, as Tom Holland and director Jon Watts announced via Instagram.

At the beginning of October 2016, recordings were made on the roof of the Maritim Hotel in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse as part of a re-shoot with Holland . In addition, recordings were made at Gendarmenmarkt . At a late hour, the square was lit up as bright as day with floodlights, Holland climbed a facade and swung onto the roof of a double-decker bus operated by the Berlin public transport company , on which it drove towards the Brandenburg Gate . However, these scenes cannot be seen in the finished film. The recordings during a party on the roof terrace of the Berlin Maritim Hotel were partly made by Holland, who was equipped with a GoPro camera during the shooting , as Peter Parker is doing a sightseeing tour through Berlin at the beginning of the film and the viewer is doing it should experience the eyes of the 15-year-old, said Watts. In another scene where Peter enters the lobby of the Berlin luxury hotel and pulls out his cell phone until the security service throws him out, Holland himself carried a camera with which he was sent off alone. Producer Eric Hauserman said the director wanted the self-made footage of Holland to look as honest and spontaneous as possible. Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures was responsible for realizing the filming of the original motifs in Germany .

Further reshoots took place from mid-March 2017. As a result of a cooperation, the redesigned Audi A8 can be seen for the first time in the film. The car was also exhibited at the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere .

Costumes

Louise Frogley designed the costumes, including the new Spider-Man suit, the many functions of which he has to discover as the film progresses, with a computer voice guiding him through the training mode , similar to Tony Stark's Iron-Man suits. Frogley worked in this role as chief costume designer for the film Iron Man 3 , among others . Watts said they should make a practical suit that looked like the costume that was computer generated for The First Avenger: Civil War , which was very complicated and required testing of various fabrics. Another difficulty was to find a spider web pattern that looks like one from every angle. In the film, Spider-Man's Auto-Fit-Suit has, as shown in a clip, over 576 possible web shooter combinations, a net grenade, a reconnaissance drone, an extended combat mode, the Taser net, net wings and a GPS tracking mode. Peter Parker can also further optimize his suit himself.

Film music

The music for the film was composed by Michael Giacchino . The soundtrack to the film comprises 22 pieces of music and was released on CD by Sony Masterworks on July 7, 2017. On May 19, 2017, Giacchino posted a short excerpt from the recordings with his orchestra via Twitter. In the end credits of the film, the battle cry “Hey ho, let's go!” Can be heard, which is taken from the first album of the Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop , which became a slogan and identification mark of the band. In June 2017 the play Spider-Man: Homecoming Suite was presented in advance. The soundtrack album also includes a revised version of the original Spider-Man theme and the theme music from the 1960s animated series, which Mihnea Manduteanu describes as a nice introduction to the story. Allie Gemmill of Bustle.com says the soundtrack is very different from other soundtracks for films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Giacchino decided to lighten up the original, classic Spider-Man title song and keep that bright energy throughout the score.

Marketing and Publishing

In April 2016, shortly after the official title was announced, the new Spider-Man movie logo was unveiled. Shortly after filming began, the first set photos were released showing Holland in his new Spider-Man costume. At the 2016 Comic-Con in San Diego, Marvel presented a first short trailer for the film, which was not officially released, but contained a first conceptual drawing of Vulture and thus showed the character design of the villain. With this, Marvel also officially confirmed who is the adversary of Spider-Man in the film. The teaser also featured mainly Peter Parker in everyday school life, which was accompanied by the song Bad Reputation by Joan Jett . Peter Parker is shown watching scenes of the fight against the Avengers on his laptop and is called a loser by his classmate Michelle because he is so absent. Furthermore, the short trailer, which is described as action-packed overall, shows shots of Spider-Man walking on a truck that is racing along a motorway. This scene was assembled with another one in which he takes off his costume and goes to a school ball. At the Comic-Con there was also a panel with director Jon Watts and the participating actors Tom Holland , Zendaya Coleman and Tony Revolori .

The premiere of Spider-Man Homecoming at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles

In August 2016, a concept drawing of the new Spider-Man was released, which was perceived as very classic and is described as an incarnation that is closer to the original character. The first trailer for the film was released on December 8, 2016. The focus is primarily on the relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark, as well as Spider-Man's attempt to become an equal superhero. On March 28, 2017, Sony Pictures Entertainment released a second trailer in which Peter, among other things, tries to save a car ferry that is being attacked and makes the acquaintance of Vulture. A final third trailer for the film followed at the end of May 2017. In June 2017, Sony announced that it would offer a VR experience for Spider-Man: Homecoming for the PlayStation VR in the summer . Also in June 2017, as part of a cooperation with the car manufacturer Audi, Marvel Studios published a TV commercial in which Peter Parker has to pass his driving test, which is made easier for him by the technology of the new Audi A8.

After a planned theatrical release for July 28, 2017 was announced in February 2015, the release date was brought forward by three weeks later. After its world premiere on June 28, 2017 in Los Angeles , Spider-Man: Homecoming was released in German cinemas on July 13, 2017. After an eight-week hiatus from foreign films, Spider-Man: Homecoming hit Chinese cinemas on September 8, 2017. In June 2019, the film was included in Netflix's program.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany the film is FSK 12. The reason for the release states: “The story, which offers a young audience numerous points of contact, is told using the means typical of the genre and features numerous turbulent action scenes, which are particularly dramatic towards the end. Their visual and effective staging can irritate and overwhelm children under the age of 12. "

The film on social media

At the beginning of December 2016, after the first trailer for the film was published on December 8, 2016, more than 612,000 new conversations about the film had been started on social media, making Spider-Man: Homecoming top of the social media hit list at this time. With more than 1.2 million new calls, the film also led the ranking at the end of March 2017 after Sony Pictures Entertainment released the second trailer.

Reviews

The film convinced 92 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.7 out of a possible 10 points.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was already widely praised in the first reviews after the film was screened in the US at the end of June 2017 . Steven Weintraub of Collider said the film was funny, full of surprises, and tons of fun. Slash Film's Peter Sciretta says Spider-Man: Homecoming is a hilarious, John Hughes- style high school film disguised as a superhero .

Frank Schnelle from epd Film believes that Jon Watts ' staging clearly emphasizes the comedic potential of Spider-Man's unfinished superhero existence and makes the young Avenger, portrayed by Tom Holland with mischievous boyishness, a distant relative of precocious cinema teenagers like Marty McFly or Ferris Bueller. Schnell goes on to say about the young protagonist that this new Peter Parker longs for nothing more than to finally break out of his dreary life as a bum, grow up and do something meaningful.

For Rolling Stone's Peter Travers , Holland is the best Spider-Man of all films to date. Spider-Man: Homecoming give his character and their traumatic experiences a real context and never forget that Peter and his alter ego are just 15-year-olds. Holland's acting performance goes beyond the studied American accent and the excited voice. Rather, he goes completely into his role, moves with the natural grace of an athlete, and Spider-Man ascends because Holland gives him wings, according to Travers.

About Michael Keaton in his role of villain, Peter Zander from the Berliner Morgenpost says: “As Birdman he had powerful wings, and that is exactly what he now has as Vulture, a sinister who kills the Washington Monument and the ferry from Staten Island wants to split two halves. A comic hero, a second as a surrogate dad and an ex-hero as a villain: It's almost comic incest, but it gives it an extra dash of humor. And soothing self-irony. "

Jörg Wunder from Tagesspiegel thinks about the antagonism between the beefy Keaton and the graceful Holland that this is grandiose: “Your most haunting confrontation is not a spectacular fight scene, but a conversation in the car with extremely threatening undertones. In addition to the adorable carefree Holland, Keaton is the casting coup of Homecoming . "

Gross profit

After its theatrical release, the film landed at number 1 in the box office in a number of countries, including South Korea, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the USA, where the film was shown in 4,348 theaters as of July 7, 2017 grossed around 117 million US dollars on its opening weekend, which far exceeded the expectations of many analysts and also of Sony Pictures. In China, the film also landed at number 1 in the box office after its launch in early September 2017, grossing $ 70.8 million there on its opening weekend. The global revenue of the film from cinema screenings amount to date to 880,200,000 US dollars, making it to 6th place of the most successful films of the year 2017 and at number 68 (as of: August 8, 2020) the world's most successful films of all time is . In Germany, the film has so far recorded 1,006,396 visitors.

In June 2017 it was announced that the new Spider-Man film series would be a trilogy. Tom Holland said: “There is a lot for Peter Parker and Spider-Man to discover and growth potential in the next two films. It is not fully developed after Spider-Man: Homecoming and I am looking forward to exploring further possibilities of how he can grow up and go through puberty. ”In an interview with Björn Becher from Filmstarts , Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Sony- Producer Amy Pascal , Spider-Man: Homecoming should build a bridge between The First Avenger: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War .
