The bus service in Berlin is largely by the Berlin Transportation Company operated (BVG). In the outskirts, buses from the surrounding regional bus companies are also used. On the largest city bus network in German-speaking countries with around 1,400 buses and a further 118 buses leased from private companies, 300,000 kilometers are covered daily in regular service. The buses run on 197 lines, including 153 lines during the day (including 120 normal city bus lines, 17 MetroBus lines that are operated around the clock, 14 ExpressBus lines with an "X" in front of the line number, 1 dial-a-bus line , 1 season line). 62 lines are served at night (including 45  night bus lines and 17 MetroBus lines; on weekends only 37 night bus lines, as the subway is then also operated continuously at night). In 2017, the BVG buses carried around 440 million passengers; the line length was given as 1675 km (daytime) and 795 km (night). The vehicle fleet consists of different bus types such as solo buses , double-deckers and articulated buses . Midibuses and minibuses are only used by private contractors.

history

1825 to 1914

Horse omnibus in Berlin

The first horse-drawn bus line in Berlin ran from the Brandenburg Gate to Charlottenburg in 1825 . The operator was Simon Kremser , who in the following years also made trips from other city gates to the corresponding neighboring towns. His omnibuses were half-open Kremser , as the type of car is named after him today, but they already drove according to a fixed timetable. The first bus line within the Berlin customs wall was set up by Israel Moses Henoch in 1840 between Alexanderplatz and Potsdamer Bahnhof . His cab monopoly had expired three years earlier .

The Concessionierte Berliner Omnibus Company received approval, five inner-city lines on October 30, 1846 horses buses to operate. Operations began on January 1, 1847. During the March revolutions in 1848, the company's vehicles were used as barricades by insurgents and damaged, and the young company became insolvent. Since 1862, the company began to expand again and 36 hauliers with 303 horse-drawn buses on 39 lines were involved in the transport, but this exceeded the demand.

In 1865 the Berliner Omnibus-Gesellschaft, a limited partnership limited by shares, was founded and took over the concessions for the Berlin bus routes.

After violent arguments in the new company about wrong decisions in the company's management, the company was dissolved a short time later. The 270 vehicles and more than a thousand horses were transferred to the newly founded Allgemeine Berliner Omnibus Actien Gesellschaft (ABOAG) in 1868 . The horse busses were already designed as deck seat vehicles and were driven as single and two-horse vehicles. Thus in 1875 14 million passengers could be carried.

At the same time, the horse tram (1865) and a few years later the electric tram (1881 in trial and 1883 in planned operation) began to compete with horse-drawn buses. As early as 1882, Werner von Siemens demonstrated the electric trolleybus on Kurfürstendamm , the first trolleybus operated electrically via an overhead line .

The majority of passenger traffic on Berlin's streets in the 1890s was taken over by the tram. The concessions for the bus connections in Berlin and from there to the neighboring communities were held by various companies. The Große Berliner Omnibus-Gesellschaft was bought up by the Neue Berliner Omnibus-Aktien-Gesellschaft in 1896 , and there was also ABOAG. In the summer of 1898, the UEG tested an electric bus powered by a battery at ABOAG. The Neue Berliner Omnibus-AG also tested battery-powered omnibuses in 1898 and 1899. In 1900 ten of these vehicles were operated by ABOAG, and the recharging of the batteries, which is used again today, was used at a charging station at the terminal stops.

In 1904, numbers (and occasionally letters) were used as line designations for the first time. In the same year the trackless railway from Niederschöneweide – Johannisthal was set up, but operations were discontinued in the course of the year. The first two buses with internal combustion engines were used in Berlin on November 19, 1905 by ABOAG on line 4 between Chausseestraße at the corner of Liesenstraße and Halleschem Tor via Friedrichstraße , which were quickly supplemented by other automobile buses. The chassis and engines of the vehicles were manufactured by Daimler in Marienfelde , the bus bodies came from Lange & Gutzeit, who also built the horse-drawn buses for ABOAG. Due to the success of the motorized buses, this new mode of transport soon spread, and several other transport companies also applied for line concessions, including the Great Berlin Tram .

1914 to 1945

During the First World War , the horses and a large part of the buses and coaches were confiscated by the army administration, so that the ABOAG finally only had 108 vehicles. At the end of the war, they were only able to operate two lines, as fuel was also scarce (some of the vehicles were even converted to run on coal or gas).

Rebuilding the company was made difficult by the high inflation in the post-war years. Bit by bit, hundreds of drivers were laid off because no more mileage was provided. In August 1923, horse-drawn buses were finally given up, and in October of the same year the fare for a section was 150 billion paper marks .

In 1916 the RK-Wagen was delivered as a standard motor bus, named after the ABOAG director Robert Kaufmann. Today replicas drive through Berlin as tourist buses.

The first double-decker buses with a closed upper deck were delivered to ABOAG in 1925 on London and Chicago chassis . This was followed a little later by the first ABOAG double-decker series: it had low-frame chassis with two axles. Three-axle vehicles were purchased from 1929. These buses were later also given a front exit door. The entrance to the bus had meanwhile moved from the rear to the right rear side.

In 1926, the city of Berlin acquired the elevated railway company and a large share of the ownership in ABOAG. In the following year, the elevated railway, tram and bus merged to form a community of interests in which there were now, for the first time, transfer tickets between modes of transport. On January 1, 1929, the ABOAG merged with the Berliner Straßenbahn-Betriebs-GmbH and the Gesellschaft für Hoch- und Untergrundbahnen to form the newly founded Berliner Verkehrs-Aktien-Gesellschaft, short BVG . At that time, 28 bus routes were operated at the city rate, nine of them also during the night, as well as one express line and six suburban lines.

For this purpose, 620 bus vehicles with around 4,500 employees were available in five depots, the buses transported 602,100 people daily over 102,500 kilometers. As a result, the Berlin transport network continued to grow, and a trolleybus network was also set up again in Spandau and Steglitz from 1933 .

In 1934 the first buses with diesel engines (D3Die) were put into service. The D-38 buses that went into operation from 1938 had a slightly more pleasing design. With the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, only three so-called double-decker “trambuses” could be taken over as Do-36s, the engines of which were not located in front of the driver's cab but in the car body. The engines were supplied by Büssing , Daimler-Benz and Henschel . The former supplier NAG was taken over by Büssing in the 1930s.

During the Second World War, a large part of the buses was again confiscated for military purposes, but this time mainly monoplane. It was only in the last months of the war that double-deck buses (mostly after dismantling the upper deck) were sent to war. Due to the lack of fuel, the buses were converted so that the engines could run on liquefied petroleum gas , and later also on non-compressed town gas. Most recently, wood gas generators were also used for wood gasification.

1945 to 1961

At the end of April 1945, bus traffic in the city had come to a complete standstill. Only 18 of the formerly more than 900 vehicles had survived the war operationally. After the surrender, the Soviet city commandant Bersarin gave the order to rebuild local public transport in Berlin on May 13, 1945. Line 5 ( Schöneberg , Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz - Zehlendorf , Rathaus) was the first bus line to be reopened on May 16, 1945 .

In the autumn of the same year the Western Allies began to set up a bus service in their sectors for the needs of their servants. The independently operated lines of the American, British and French occupying powers were in operation in West Berlin until 1994 (see picture of a bus of the British Route Bus Service from 1983 at the end of the 1961 paragraph to this day in this article).

During the Berlin blockade in 1948, public bus traffic also experienced an unexpected boom - while the trams and underground trains were severely restricted by the power cuts, the fuel for the buses could be transported to West Berlin via the airlift . The BVG succeeded in transporting 23 million passengers in its buses in 1948 with only 43 operational vehicles (of 564, the rest were not operational or were waiting in the workshops for refurbishment).

D2U in front of the radio house

The first double-deck new buses were the type D2U (for the first time with a self-supporting body) and D3U (39 three-axle vehicles with chassis ), which came into operation in 1951/1952. These buses had an underfloor engine from Büssing of the type U10 (9,850 cm³, 150 HP), as they were also used in the rail buses of the DB . The two-axle D2U were built until 1964.

Trolleybus at the stop Fruchtstrasse and Stalinallee , 1954

In the mid-1950s, the West Berlin Senate began planning a “ car-friendly city ”, in the course of which the tram with its outdated fleet of vehicles and ailing route network was to disappear from the cityscape. As a replacement, 140 new buses were ordered in 1954 instead of the originally planned 40 TED 54 / BED 54 trams . In the course of the dismantling of the tram, the trolleybuses also disappeared from the street scene. The last trolleybus line in West Berlin was closed in 1965. In 1951 East Berlin began to build up an trolleybus network .

E2U cars based on the type of double-decker bus D2U came into circulation as single deck buses, which were manufactured by Gaubschat (most recently by Orenstein & Koppel ) with Büssing components from 1955 to 1964 .

From 1972 VÖV standard buses were procured

From 1961

After the wall was built on August 13, 1961, a boycott of the S-Bahn operated by the Reichsbahn was called in the western part of the city . For this purpose, bus lines were quickly set up parallel to the S-Bahn lines . Because of the increased need for vehicles and personnel, buses and drivers were borrowed from German transport companies, including a. articulated buses that have not yet been used in urban traffic in Berlin . These so-called "solidarity buses" were returned until 1966 after another large number of new vehicles had been ordered. BVG had to order these buses "off the peg" directly from Büssing, as it would have taken too long to manufacture them via the body manufacturer . There were 273 coaches of the type Büssing President 14R with underfloor engine and three doors as well as a conductor's seat in the rear. Some of them were later converted into one-man cars, with the rear door and the conductor's seat being removed for the flow of passengers and the space being used for twelve additional seats.

In the following years, however, there was a continuous decline in the number of passengers in West Berlin, so that the bus fleet continued to shrink. This is mainly due to the growing motorization and underground construction.

As a rationalization measure, the one-man double-deck operation was introduced from 1965, first on line 20 (now 222). For this, a new type of bus was Büssing DE ( D oppeldecker- E inmannwagen) procured with double-width front door and stairs in the middle of the design on the previously supplied type DF ( D oppeldecker- F built ahrgastfluss) with three doors and Schaffner seat. It was the last of the buses with the wailing sound of the two-stage Voith Diwa automatic transmission, which is characteristic of Berlin . The last bus was delivered in 1974, the last vehicles of this type were retired in 1987. These buses were only gradually equipped with validators .

The last "real" conductors' cars disappeared in 1978 (types D2U and DF). Since there was now an overhang of conductors and, due to the existing tariff, the handling by the driver on high-demand lines led to longer stays at the stops, one-man type DE cars had to move to buses with a conductor's seat on the left in the area between the driver's seat and the stairs (Type DES) can be converted. The last bus conductor was only withdrawn in 1981. Successor to the DE-series from 1974 onwards the type MAN SD 200 , as S tandard D ouble decker on the VÖV-standard bus based.

When the BVG took over S-Bahn operations in the western part of the city, many parallel bus routes were changed in 1984, but only one line (66, formerly AS4) was discontinued. In the eastern part of the city, the last of the three trolleybus lines was closed at the beginning of 1973 .

Ikarus 280 articulated bus of the VEB Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB) 1987

In East Berlin there were double-deck buses with a “snout” until 1974: from 1954 to 1956, the Do 54 and Do 56 types were put into service. As in West Berlin, the Büssing D2U (there without a "snout"), the initially open platform received a folding door from the mid-1960s . Then these cars drove without conductors and were taken out of service until 1974.

The standard bus in the eastern part of the city were the single-deck and articulated buses with underfloor engines from the Hungarian manufacturer Ikarus .

Talks between BVB (East) and BVG (West) took place as early as the beginning of 1989 regarding the transfer of old double-deckers to East Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in November, the transport companies were no longer able to cope with the volume of traffic, so 'solidarity buses' from other transport companies and 100 rented coaches were used again. On June 2, 1991, the line number system was standardized with the help of three-digit line numbers, and at the beginning of 1992 the two Berlin transport companies were finally merged into one company.

Line numbering scheme

Since the changeover to three-digit line numbers, the route should be clearly assigned to the developed districts. The first digit provides information on the operating time or operating mode, the second on the area of application and the third on the route.

First place
  • 1 = normal city line, daily operation, usually every 10 to 20 minutes
  • 2 = normal city line, daily operation, usually every 10 to 20 minutes
  • 3 = normal city line with time restrictions and individual clocks
  • 4 to 9 = currently only used by bus companies in the surrounding cities and districts, some of which also go to Berlin (these do not follow the scheme for the second and third digits)
  • M = metro line, normal city line in daily 24-hour operation and at least every 10 minutes or more during the day, coordinated with the rest of the night network every 30 minutes at night
  • X = express line with fewer stops (apart from the outer branches of the X10) at least every 20 minutes during individual operating times
  • N = night line, daily operation, usually every 30 minutes (except N1, N3, N5, N6, N8 and N9, which replace the underground lines on the nights from Sunday / Monday to Thursday / Friday Lines N2 and N7 also run on parts of the nights Fri / Sat and Sat / Sun)
Second position

A local assignment is possible with the second digit. Due to the length of the bus routes, many of them run through several urban areas, but it can be relatively clearly defined:

Third digit

The third digit, taking into account the first and second, is used for pure numbering and in this context can describe the basic route orientation, for example:

  • _33 = Haselhorst - Borsigwalde via Bernauer Straße
    • 133 as the main line
    • N33 as a night line
    • X33 as an express line
  • _34 = Spandau - Kladow via Gatow
    • 134 as the main line
    • 234 as a local feeder to the route
    • 334 as a local feeder to the route
    • N34 as a night line
    • X34 as an express line (towards the western city center )
  • _69 = Biesdorf - Müggelheim via Köpenick
    • 169 as the main line
    • X69 as the main line with alternating routing
    • 269 as a shortened main line
    • 369 as a further external route (with fewer journeys)
    • N69 as a night line

In such a large and branched route network, this scheme is more of a theoretical nature. There are various exceptions, for example:

  • Line M29, which runs not in the north, but in the central south of Berlin. This number (first 29, later 129) has traditionally been assigned to this route for many years
  • Lines X7 and X9 as two-digit line names for the airport feeder. The X9 is based on the main line 109, while the X7 has received its number analogous to the continuing U7
  • Lines N1 – N3 and N5 – N9, which are based on the underground lines and replace them at night
  • Line 399, which runs every 20 minutes during the entire operating time; however, it is a local line in ring operation
  • Individual sections of some metro lines that are not served 24 hours a day and / or not at least every 10 minutes
  • Night line N16, which already runs in the late evening and only between S Wannsee and S Potsdam Hauptbahnhof every 60 minutes
  • TXL line, the name of which is based on the IATA code of the airport served (TXL for Tegel )

Line network

MetroBus

Since the timetable change on December 12, 2004, so-called MetroBus lines have been running on the main lines. The metro buses run every ten minutes or more during the day and are operated 24 hours a day, the outer branches usually 20 hours a day. At night there is a 30-minute cycle on the lines of the branches served. The buses of 17 lines run on high-demand major axes and are together with the corresponding Metro Tram -lines of the tram , the S- and U-Bahn complement -Netz.

Three of the express lines are airport lines: the TXL and the X9 bus, which are supposed to bring passengers from the city center quickly to Tegel Airport , and the X7 line, which runs from Rudow underground station to Schönefeld Airport .

A surcharge was initially levied for the TXL, which was introduced in 1999, as the bus was primarily intended for air passengers and was only intended to play a subordinate role in normal city traffic. A one-way trip by bus initially cost 9.90 DM , from 2001 it then cost  6 DM or 2 DM surcharge on the normal price. For several years now, the bus has been available at the normal rate. In the following years, the route of the line changed several times, which in the meantime had developed into a preliminary operation of the U5 through the operation of the Alexanderplatz - Hauptbahnhof . In July 2016, the line was temporarily shortened to improve punctuality and only ran on the route from the main train station (Invalidenpark) to Tegel Airport. Between October 17, 2016 and June 2019, the TXL line again operated the old route (Tegel Airport - Alexanderplatz), and the shortened line variant has been used again since June 2019.

In 2003, the BVG also established an express connection from Potsdamer Platz to Schönefeld Airport. The line was called "SXF". It was discontinued after a short time due to a lack of demand due to the surcharge.

Until October 24, 2011 there was an express connection from Südkreuz train station to Schönefeld Airport. BEX's SXF1 line ran on the A 100 and A 113 every 20 minutes and was subject to a surcharge. In the course of the S-Bahn chaos , the surcharge was lifted in 2009, however, as the S45 S-Bahn line still did not operate. As a rule, a one-way trip without a ticket cost 6 euros, with a VBB ticket 4 euros and with a VBB season ticket 3 euros. With the reintroduction of the S45, the express bus was discontinued due to a lack of profitability.

Regional buses

The BVG is partly operated with extended city bus routes beyond the Berlin city limits. Some bus routes operated by the surrounding regional bus companies also run to Berlin. The concessions are mostly divided. S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations on the outskirts of Berlin are often served as the terminus. The operation by the other companies takes place as compensation for services of the BVG on routes outside Berlin, where important destinations such as regional train stations and shopping centers are accessed from Berlin.

At the S + U Rathaus Spandau stop, there are buses from four different transport companies:

  • OVG : 136 Spandau - Hennigsdorf (joint operation with BVG)
  • ViP : 638 Spandau - Potsdam
  • Havelbus : 671 Spandau - Schönwalde - Paaren im Glien (- sometimes further than 659 to Nauen )
  • BVG : all remaining lines

Special lines for the "Long Night of the Museums"

A " Long Night of Museums " takes place twice a year in Berlin . The BVG operates the traffic on the shuttle bus routes on both nights. In 2013, for the 32nd  Long Night of the Museums , around 50 buses served the following lines:

night bus

Night bus service in Berlin starts at 0:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 a.m. on working days, 5:30 a.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays. Most lines are served at least every 30 minutes. There are around fifty night traffic junctions, which are divided into three sub-categories:

  1. Main connections: S + U-Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten and S + U-Bahnhof Alexanderplatz (the buses of the night lines in question meet at these two stations every half hour )
  2. Hunt groups: (the buses of all lines concerned wait for each other at these stops)
  3. Directional connections (connection in selected main direction / corner connection)

There are currently 45 night lines in Berlin. Added to this are the metro lines, which also operate at night, and the lines that replace the underground lines (except for the U4 and U55) except on weekends and before public holidays (e.g. bus N1 instead of U1). These largely adapt to the routes of the underground lines. However, these night bus routes only operate when the trains on the underground lines do not run continuously (even at night). For example, the N7 bus only runs between Schönefeld Airport and the Rudow underground station when the U7 is in continuous nighttime traffic . Door-to-door service is also offered on some night lines that operate on the outskirts . Some (Metrobus) lines are coupled at one end point with another night bus line, such as the M48, on which buses continue from the Zehlendorf Eiche stop as the N16 to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof . Another example is the N9 line, whose carriages continue as the M85 from Rathaus Steglitz station . The N71 line to Schönefeld Airport, which was coupled with the N7, was merged into a whole N7 line. The N7 is thus one of the longest night bus routes in Europe with a journey time of 111 minutes for one direction.

The BVG bus fleet comprises around 1500 vehicles and is very mixed, but until the beginning of the 2020s consisted almost exclusively of diesel-powered vehicles. Of double-decker buses on articulated buses to minibuses the BVG uses a variety of bus types. These are subject to a continuous renewal process and are to be completely replaced by electrically operated types by 2030. Since BVG services are also outsourced to subcontractors , buses from other manufacturers are also used in local public transport in Berlin.

In many cases, the BVG has already played a leading role in the use of environmentally friendly technologies. In February 2004, for example, production buses that met the Euro 5 emissions standard were put into service in Germany for the first time . The average fuel consumption per vehicle type at that time was around 63 liters per 100 km for double deckers, 56 liters per 100 km for articulated buses and 42 liters per 100 km for 12 m monoplane.

Vehicle manufacturer

We currently use our own buses from the manufacturers MAN ( double-decker buses , articulated buses , solo buses), Mercedes-Benz (articulated buses, solo buses, solo low-entry buses ), Solaris (articulated buses), Scania (double-decker buses, articulated buses) and VDL (double-decker buses, Solo LightLowEntry buses). Almost all of the double-deckers were supplied by MAN ; the majority of the articulated buses come from Solaris and, since 2014, from Scania.

Accessibility

With the gradual renewal of the vehicle fleet, the accessibility of the vehicles has also been improved. In the course of 2009, all BVG buses became barrier-free (except historic vehicles).

double decker

In February 2010, the last vehicles of the two-axle double-decker bus type MAN ND 202 were retired. Contrary to previous plans for the long-term complete withdrawal of double-decker buses in favor of articulated buses from the fleet, in 2004 double-decker buses of the new type MAN Lion's City DD were purchased by BVG. Originally there were 416 MAN A39 cars. On the night of January 1st to 2nd, 2016, car 3132 in Reinickendorf burned out completely due to a technical defect. The same fate befell car 3126 in Spandau on the morning of May 31, 2018. In June 2018, BVG also began to take out the first car of this type due to age and condition. In August 2020, 275 of the 400 buses were still in the BVG fleet. Of these, 75 buses were in the workshops.

There are also four historical buses, including three replicas of the RK bus and a largely original Do 56 made by Waggonbau Bautzen from the GDR production. On January 30, 2015, the new prototype was presented by the manufacturer Scania. A prototype VDL Citea DLF 114 has been in use since August . On October 14, 2015, a double-decker from the Scottish company Alexander Dennis was presented and a test run for six weeks was announced.

Since none of the test buses really worked, the MAN A39 double-deckers have been extensively refurbished since the beginning of 2017. The work includes, among other things, replacing the floor cladding, the roof and replacing the previous sheet steel shell with a much lighter one made of plastic. In order to save unnecessary work, the outer panels are attached to a column, then the bus rolls forward and the outer paneling loosens like a can opener. Depending on the condition of the vehicles, the work varies significantly; on average, the renovation takes about eight weeks per vehicle. The vehicles (now A39E, "E" for upgraded) no longer have a gray stripe on the lower edge, and the optical unification of the windows by a previous black plate above the first door is no longer required. All vehicles have distinctive knot catchers on the right-hand side, front and rear. The interior is not remodeled.

In October 2018 it was announced that Alexander Dennis had been awarded the contract to supply new double-deckers. Initially, two test buses are to be purchased and delivered in 2020; if these prove themselves, another 70 will follow, with the option of up to 200 vehicles. A Euro 6 diesel engine will continue to be used as the drive. The total planned costs should be around 220 million euros.

Lightweight buses

From July 2012, two lightweight buses from the Dutch manufacturer VDL were used in long-term tests at BVG . The test operation has already shown after one year that savings potentials in diesel consumption of 19 to 26% can really be realized in daily operation. The tests have been completed and it has been decided that up to 236 of the VDL Citeas will be purchased by 2019 . The first 40 were announced for 2014, and 70 more followed in 2015. The vehicles weigh around three tons less than comparable products from the manufacturer Evobus and thus achieve the reduction. Otherwise, the buses have conventional diesel technology (currently Euro 5 with AdBlue ), which makes them significantly cheaper to buy than hybrid buses .

Depots

Buses and staff are stationed at the depots. The buses are cleaned, serviced, repaired and made available for the next use every day by the company workshops after they have been used.

Indira Gandhi Street

The buses of depot "I" (Weißensee, Indira-Gandhi-Straße) mainly serve lines in northeast Berlin. This depot in the eastern part of Berlin was put into operation on March 1, 1966. With over 113,000 square meters, it is the largest depot with around 390 buses.

Lichtenberg

The buses of the depot "L" (Lichtenberg, Siegfriedstrasse) serve lines in northeast Berlin. Commissioning was initially only as a tram depot in 1913. Trolleybuses were added in 1951 and since 1971 it has been a combined bus / tram depot. With around 38,000 square meters, it is the smallest depot with around 150 buses.

Müllerstrasse

The buses of the depot "M" (Wedding, Müllerstrasse) serve lines in northwest Berlin. Commissioning was in 1927 as a tram depot. Since 1960 it has been a pure bus depot. The size is 44,547 square meters, it is home to around 240 buses.

Spandau

The buses of the depot "S" (Spandau, Am Omnibushof) serve lines in the north-west of Berlin. Commissioning was in 1967 as one of the youngest farms. The size is 66,629 square meters and is currently home to around 205 buses.

Britz

The buses of depot "B" (Britz, Gradestrasse) serve lines in the south of Berlin. It was commissioned in 1910 as a tram depot. Since 1966 it has been a pure bus depot, which is home to approx. 220 buses on around 44,500 square meters.

Cicerostrasse

The buses of depot “C” (Wilmersdorf, Westfälische Straße) serve lines in the southwest of Berlin. Commissioning was originally in 1900 as a tram depot . After the closure of the tram station in 1939 and destruction due to the effects of the war in 1943, the area was then used as an allotment garden colony and reopened in 1958 as a bus depot. Around 215 buses are located here on around 43,000 square meters. Due to the lack of space, the depot is mostly double-decker and short single-decker buses. There are currently only ten articulated buses and a few rental cars stationed there for use on routes X10, X83 and M85.
