The Lion's City is a series of omnibus models developed by the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group for regular service .

General

The low-floor variants for urban and intercity traffic are summarized under the name Lion's City , of which the A20 type has been in series production since 1996, the A21 since 1997 and the A23 since 1998. The name Lion's City was initially only used to market the low-floor bus family; in September 2004 it was also introduced as a sales name. At the same time, the models were given a facelift . The Lion's Regio , derived from the Lion's City, is the combination bus variant for overland scheduled services as well as for excursions and transfers. In spring 2015, the cheaper MAN Lion's Intercity was presented.

In September 1995, MAN presented the A20 intercity bus, its first bus of the second low-floor generation. The A21 was founded in 1997 as a successor to the bus -type A10 introduced. After the appearance of the competing model Mercedes-Benz Citaro , the design of which was considered more successful by the trade press, MAN brought a visually revised series onto the market in 1998. At the same time, the A23 was released as an articulated bus that replaced the A11 . In 2000 the two 15 meter long versions A26 (city bus) and A25 ( intercity bus ) came out. In the same year, the A76 appeared as the first of several midibus variants that were produced by Göppel . The three-door, 12-meter A37 Lion's Single with an upright engine in a tower design and super-single tires on the rear axle was developed for the Italian and Spanish markets in 2002 .

In addition to the expansion of the range by two low-entry versions and a double-decker bus , all previous models were presented in a visually and technically revised form in autumn 2004. Since then, the vehicles have been offered under the name Lion's City . At the end of 2005, a 10.5 meter long midibus came out with the A47, which was completely built by MAN and, in contrast to the Göppel variants, has the standard width of 2.5 meters. The extended articulated bus Lion's City GL was released in 2006 as the sister model of the Neoplan N 4522 from the largely identical Centroliner Evolution series . In May 2007 the four-axle, 20.5 meter long articulated bus Lion's City GXL was presented. However, since the interest in buying was below expectations, the model did not go into series production. The demonstration car was the only built example to be sold to the St. Gallen public transport company. The Lion's City T and low-entry buses, which look similar to the Lion's Classic high-floor vehicle , were adapted to the design of the rest of the model range in 2008 and renamed Lion's City LE and LE Ü . The 13.7 meter long Lion's City C model, designed for the Swedish market, has been available since 2009 . In addition to this model, the three-axle models, with the exception of the Lion's City DD , have also been supplemented by low-entry variants.

With the exception of the articulated bus variants, an ESP has been available since 2012, initially subject to a surcharge. A year later it was included in the standard equipment.

In July 2017, a new generation was announced that is to be based on a completely newly developed city bus platform and has a new design. Prototypes are already in use at VAG Nürnberg and Verkehr und Wasser in Oldenburg , among others . In May 2018 MAN announced the postponement of the start of series production to 2019.

Most of the MAN low-floor buses are manufactured in the Polish plant in Starachowice . The double-decker Lion's City DD was built in the MAN coach plant in Plauen and then transferred to Viseon in Pilsting , where the interior is fitted out. The two low-entry versions Lion's City LE and LE Ü come from Ankara (Turkey). The final assembly of city buses, which has been located in Poznan since 1998, was relocated to Starachowice in 2016, where previously only the shell construction had taken place since 2001.

The production of MAN low-floor buses in Salzgitter , which was originally concentrated at the site, was discontinued in mid-2008. Last between 200 and 300 Lion's City were completed there each year, mostly vehicles with alternative drives and / or special equipment. Until 2016, only chassis for high-floor buses were built in Salzgitter. Since 2004 the vast majority of city buses have come from Poland.

The midibuses with Göppel body were offered in the Lion's City design from autumn 2005 (A35) and summer 2007 (A66 / A76) . The versions in the old design were marketed under the name Lion's Midi . Göppel also offers conversions into passenger trailer towing vehicles.

In addition to diesel engines , the Lion's City is also available with natural gas and liquefied gas engines from the start. MAN is the market leader for buses with natural gas drives. A larger fleet of natural gas vehicles is e.g. They are used , for example, by HTM , Veolia and Connexxion in the Netherlands, by Arriva in Sweden, by Tide Buss in Norway or by Stadtwerke Augsburg (only with natural gas vehicles) and VAG in Nuremberg. At times, Wiener Linien's fleet consisted exclusively of liquid gas vehicles , the majority of which were from MAN.

In addition, MAN was involved in several pilot projects on low-floor buses with fuel cells or hydrogen combustion engines . From 2006 to 2009, on the occasion of the European HyFleet CUTE project, the last 14  Lion's City H2 with hydrogen combustion engines were running at the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). They covered around 8,500 kilometers and started regular service in Berlin-Spandau in 2006. In 2009, the manufacturer announced to MAN that it would give up the project due to increased defects.

In 2001/2002 MAN tested the first diesel-electric hybrid bus with ultracapacitors in regular service in Nuremberg . From 2005 to 2008, further test operations with further developed prototypes took place. After pre-series vehicles a. a. in Munich and Vienna, series production of the Lion's City Hybrid began in 2011 . The articulated bus variant Lion's City G Hybrid was planned for 2012, but did not appear.

Furnishing

The vehicles are available as left-hand and right-hand drive and can e.g. B. be equipped with a wheelchair ramp , air conditioning , video surveillance, a lowering function ( kneeling ) and / or a passenger counter.

The Lion's City is equipped as standard with a driver's workplace specially developed by MAN, as the company Continental (formerly VDO ), as a monopoly in this area , can determine the price of the standard VDV workplace practically freely.
