The Göppel Bus GmbH was a German company based in Nobitz - Ehrenhain , the city buses and passenger trailer produced and sold. The company had 145 employees and in 2010 achieved a turnover of 15.5 million euros.

history

In 1923 the master wagoner Markus Göppel founded a body construction company in Augsburg , from which the later Markus Göppel GmbH & Co. KG emerged . Production of bus bodies began as early as 1925 ; Since 1935 all-steel bodies were on commercial vehicle - chassis of MAN offered and others.

From the 1960s onwards, Göppel's most important mainstay was the manufacture of back-up units (i.e. rear sections) for articulated buses . When the articulated pusher bus increasingly established itself in Germany from the beginning of the 1980s , this business area ceased and the resulting gap was filled with the increasing production of midibuses on MAN chassis.

In 1987 the "Göppel Helicon" was presented on the three-axle MAN 22.330 chassis. The double-decker and high-decker coach series with an underfloor driver's seat, which were missing in the MAN program , were offered as Helicon 400 and 380, respectively.

Low-floor technology was introduced in the 1990s . In addition, Göppel temporarily manufactured a 13.7 m version of the MAN low-floor bus.

In 2003 Göppel took over a majority of 51% in the previous Neoplan plant in Ehrenhain in Thuringia . The manufacture of midibuses of the MAN and Neoplan brands was concentrated there from then on. Göppel Bus GmbH , which was based in Nobitz-Ehrenhain, was created by taking over the remaining shares in 2006 .

The core business was the production of city buses. In June 2010, Göppel launched its own family of city buses under the name go4city . Göppel developed the vehicles in Augsburg and manufactured them in the Thuringia plant.

The company offered bus trains for public transport under the name of Göppel Train . These are low-floor city buses with passenger trailers in two design variants. By coupling and uncoupling the trailer, the transport capacities can be adapted to requirements, which saves fuel in idle times.

In addition, as a partner of the MAN low-floor midibuses (2.38 m wide), the company built on MAN chassis for many years. Different types with lengths between 8.6 and 11.2 meters were offered.

In 2012 the AutoTram Extra Grand was presented. With a length of over 30 meters, the three-part vehicle is currently the longest bus in the world.

In 2013 the company went bankrupt and was then taken over by the Russian Kirov works from Saint Petersburg . In October 2014 the company had to file for bankruptcy again. However, no new investor was found.
