AutoTram is an urban passenger transportation system. It was first presented in April 2005. The system developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Transport and Infrastructure Systems (IVI) in Dresden is a new variant of the lane bus principle. A combination of fuel cell and momentum accumulator is used to store energy for the drive . A concept similar to this was also found in the gyrobus developed in Switzerland in 1950 . In order to be able to do without rails and overhead lines, the AutoTram is controlled by an optical guidance system and runs on normal rubber tires.

drive

The first version of the AutoTram's drive consisted of an 80 kW fuel cell, which is also used in the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell , and a 325 kW flywheel that can store four kilowatt hours . Later, double-layer capacitors and a high-performance battery system were used for energy storage. The combination is particularly helpful in city traffic, where you often accelerate and brake.

AutoTram Extra Grand

The AutoTram Extra Grand was first presented in 2012. With a length of over 30 meters, the three-part double articulated bus is currently the longest bus in the world. It can transport 256 passengers (96 of them seated). The vehicle was built by the Göppel Bus company in Thuringia. A diesel hybrid drive is used for the drive .
