The Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI, also known as Fraunhofer IVI , is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research e. V. (FhG) . The institute is based in Dresden. Its activities can be assigned to applied research and development in the fields of engineering and natural sciences as well as computer science.

history

The institute is one of the oldest control engineering research institutions in Germany. In 1957, Heinrich Kindler, professor for control engineering at what was then the Dresden University of Technology, founded a position for control engineering at the German Academy of Sciences , which was integrated into the Fraunhofer Society in 1992.

Initially, the institute was called "facility process control" (EPS) and was a branch of the Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing IITB in Karlsruhe .

At the beginning of 1999 IVI was run as an independent Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems one of the Fraunhofer Institutes, but until 2013 it was still run as a sub-institute of the IITB (now IOSB) Karlsruhe.

On January 1, 2014, the Fraunhofer IVI became independent.

Research and Development

With a wide range of topics in the areas of traffic telematics, dispatching, logistics as well as vehicle, drive and sensor technology, but also in the areas of information, communication, traffic planning and traffic ecology, the Fraunhofer IVI meets the current requirements of the times.

The institute has efficient laboratory equipment, innovative test platforms and vehicles as well as the most modern IT structures. Since 2013, a new technical center with a vehicle hall and adjoining test oval has also been part of the institute's research infrastructure.

The institute was particularly well-known with the 30.7 meter long AutoTram ® Extra Grand, electronic ticketing, the fast-charging electric bus and a system for cross-border disaster control (MobiKat). In recent times, the autartec® house has been the focus of reporting.

Cooperations

Close technical and personal cooperation with the Faculty of Transport Sciences “Friedrich List” and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Process and Energy Technology at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg promote the transfer of knowledge into industrial practice.

The Fraunhofer application center "Networked Mobility and Infrastructure" at the Technical University of Ingolstadt is currently under construction.

The Fraunhofer IVI is part of the Fraunhofer IUK Technology Group and is a member of the Fraunhofer Transport, Energy, Batteries and Big Data alliances. It is also a member of the Dresden science association DRESDEN-concept .

Infrastructure

The organizational chart of the departments gives an overview of the tasks:

  • Institute director, administration, communication and design, IT
    • Mobility and digital services
      • Data systems and assistance
      • Ticketing and tariffs
    • Cognitive and cooperative systems
    • Vehicle and traffic system technology

At the end of 2019 there were around 140 employees at the institute, the majority of whom are scientists and technicians . The institute also constantly employs students who are involved in the projects as part of their theses or as a research assistant .

The operating budget of the Fraunhofer IVI was around € 13.8 million in the 2019 financial year.

The Fraunhofer IVI is headed by Prof. Matthias Klingner.
