UIQ ( User Interface Quartz ) is a graphical user interface for mobile phones based on the Symbian operating system . It has not been further developed since 2009. UIQ Technology, the developer company, was a subsidiary of Symbian Ltd. and was acquired by Sony Ericsson in November 2006 . With the establishment of the Symbian Foundation and the transfer of Symbian OS to the Symbian platform , Sony Ericsson and Motorola gave up their support for UIQ, the developer company declared its bankruptcy in January 2009 .

history

UIQ uses a screen size of 208–240 × 320 pixels and has been optimized for input with a pen. Included with the surface include the phone function, messaging features like SMS, MMS, e-mail, the task list ( to-do list ), a voice recording, managing contacts on your phone, a calendar, a memo function and a web browser for mobile surfing on the internet . All functions can be selected with a pen on the touchscreen . At least version 7 of Symbian OS is required for the function of UIQ.

Version 3.0 of UIQ, which was newly introduced in 2005, also supports one-handed operation on mobile phones without a touchscreen. With this version, UIQ was a direct competitor to the S60 user interface from Nokia , the latest version of which supports screen sizes of up to 352 × 416 pixels (or larger for the Nokia E90 ). The first devices with UIQ 3.0 included the well-equipped Sony Ericsson P990i smartphone , the Sony Ericsson M600i business mobile phone and the Sony Ericsson W950i from the Walkman range . The current Sony Ericsson smartphones with UIQ are the P1i , which combines the advantages of the M600i (fixed keyboard with double letters) with those of the P990i (features) in one compact device, and the Sony Ericsson W960i , which places more emphasis on multimedia applications and has a classic numeric keypad.

Motorola presented a UIQ smartphone called the MOTORIZR Z8 again after a long period of time at the 3GSM World Congress . Equipped with a sliding, ergonomic design for one-hand operation without a pressure-sensitive screen, it was available from April 2007.

The two owners, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, announced in 2008 that they would no longer bring any new UIQ smartphones onto the market. The 270 employees who were responsible for the development of the user interface were dismissed. The reasons for giving up the joint venture were to be found in the fact that the interface had not met with enough approval on the market and that the joint open source Symbian platform should be based on S60 instead of UIQ.
