The Sony Ericsson P990 is a smartphone from the Swedish - Japanese mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson .

It came on the market in the third quarter of 2006, is the successor to the Sony Ericsson P910 and thus continues the P series. The P990i runs under the Symbian OS version 9.1 and uses the Sony-Ericsson UIQ 3 user interface . Furthermore, the P990 is WLAN , according to the IEEE 802.11b standard , as well as UMTS- compatible. Also, video calls are possible, but a second small VGA camera located at the front. A 1.9 megapixel camera with autofocus is attached to the back.

The QWERTZ / QWERTY keyboard is on the device itself and no longer on the inside of the numeric keypad cover (flip), as it was on the previous model, and is illuminated. As a result, the touchscreen area shrank while at the same time increasing the resolution, which now corresponds to the QVGA dimensions (240 × 320 pixels). When the flip is closed, part of the display is covered and the touchscreen functionality is deactivated; the P990 can be operated like a conventional mobile phone. The flip can be dismantled using the tool supplied, as the phone can still be fully operated without the numeric keypad.

The smartphone runs on a ARM - the main processor from Philips with 208 MHz clock frequency. Competitors include the HTC Wizard ( T-Mobile MDA Vario II ), various Nokia Nseries and Nokia Eseries models ( Nokia N80 , Nokia E70 , Nokia E61i ) and the Motorola MPx220 , all of the models mentioned differing significantly in at least one criterion (Weight, size, computing power, price, etc.).

A Skype client is now also available for Symbian OS . With the software Fring for UIQ, IP telephony is possible with the P990 .

The P990 can also recognize handwriting.
