Sony Mobile Communications was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese company Sony . The company was until February 15, 2012 a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson and acted as Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB . In 2001, the joint venture was as a Swedish public company with headquarters in London was founded. From April 1, 2019, Sony Mobile, the division for u. a. the smartphone models, no longer exist. Instead, this division will be merged with the TV, audio and cameras divisions and run under the name “Electronics Products and Solutions”.

The company headquarters are in Tokyo ; however, the company's main location is in Lund, Sweden . At the beginning of 2015, the company announced that it would lay off 2,100 of the 7,000 employees worldwide. 1,000 of the total of 2,200 jobs at the Lund site will be cut.

history

Ericsson operates as a telecommunications group and was one of the largest manufacturers of mobile telephones in the early 1990s . But the cell phone division showed increasing weaknesses in the new millennium. Marketing and delivery problems and sluggish management were cited as reasons for poor business .

In addition, the Ericsson leadership had missed market trends and was therefore unable to meet customer requirements. The technical level of the Ericsson devices was always very high, but the angular design prevented commercial success outside the business customer area and pushed the company to the edge of the market. Most recently, Ericsson had to subsidize each of its mobile phones with just under 60 euros , which led to high losses and almost bankruptcy.

Ericsson and Sony Corporation announced on April 24, 2001 that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The aim was to found a joint company in which the mobile phone business areas of both companies will be brought together worldwide. The new company, called Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications , would benefit from Ericsson's telecommunications expertise and Sony's experience in consumer electronics . The existing product lines under the Ericsson and Sony brand names were retained until the new brand was able to introduce its own products.

On August 28, 2001, Ericsson and Sony agreed to merge their mobile phone businesses and signed an agreement that gave both companies an equal share in Sony Ericsson. In the course of the negotiations, Sony set the condition that Sony Ericsson had to make a profit by the end of 2004 at the latest, otherwise they would get out of the joint venture again - this condition was met in the fourth quarter of 2003 when Sony Ericsson was able to present a positive balance sheet for the first time . On September 11, 2001, the joint venture was officially approved by the management of Ericsson and Sony.

On October 1, 2001, the Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications joint venture began operations after approval by the competition authorities . According to the press release, the goal was “to become number one for mobile multimedia products in the next five years”. At the same time, the new Sony Ericsson brand logo was presented. The research and development of mobile phones in Dornach ( Aschheim ) and in North Carolina was given up at the end of 2003 due to financial difficulties in the course of the joint venture . Around 300 employees were laid off at the Dornach site. In 2004 Sony Ericsson left the Dornach location.

On March 18, 2009, Ericsson expressed interest in leaving the joint venture. Sony agreed to take over the joint venture in full and buy out Ericsson, but did not want to do so without investment help from a bank due to the recent slump in profits. However, two days later, on March 20, 2009, this was denied by an Ericsson company spokesman.

With the proliferation of smartphones, Sony Ericsson's market share fell. This was 9% in 2006 and fell to 1.7% by 2011.

On October 27, 2011, Sony and Ericsson announced that Sony would now take over the company completely and pay 1.05 billion euros for it. The takeover should be completed in February 2012, it was announced. The package also includes license agreements and some relevant patent groups. The company planned to only manufacture smartphones from 2012. On February 15, 2012, Sony completed the full acquisition. On February 22, 2012, the company logo was replaced by that of Sony and the website was adapted to the design of Sony. The renaming in Sony Mobile Communications AB was still pending. On February 29, 2012, the former Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications was renamed Sony Mobile Communications. The company's headquarters were relocated to Lund as part of the takeover. As announced on April 4, 2012, Kunimasa Suzuki will represent Sony Mobile Communications AB as CEO and President from May 16, 2012. The previous CEO Bert Nordberg will take over the position of Chairman of Sony Mobile Communications from this point in time.

In mid-2018, Sony started discontinuing its own apps due to its economic situation.

Research and development are carried out at locations in Sweden , Japan , the People's Republic of China , the United States and Great Britain .

Cell phones until 2012 (Sony-Ericsson)

The main business of Sony Ericsson was the manufacture of mobile phones. For devices with expandable memory, in contrast to competitors, Sony's proprietary Memory Stick format is used . In the meantime, models also offer a memory card slot for the widely used microSD format such as. B. the K850 and the smartphone Xperia X10.

In most cases, the model names are structured according to a uniform scheme. Here designated

  • a preceding capital letter the series with a basic device property
C - Cyber-shot models (further development of the K series, focus on the camera function; previously outdoor models)
D - T-Mobile model ( branding )
F - Fun model (mobile phone with special game functions)
G - generation web model (bar mobile phone with touchscreen)
J - entry-level model (reduced functionality, mostly produced by third-party companies)
K - volume model (improved camera and multimedia functions)
M - smartphone model without camera (touchscreen, Symbian operating system with UIQ interface)
P - smartphone model with camera (touchscreen, Symbian operating system with UIQ interface)
R - radio model with special radio functions
S - swivel / slider model (elegant design)
T - trend model (formerly volume models)
V - Vodafone model (branding)
W - Walkman model (improved music player, better headphones)
X - Xperia model (smartphone with Windows Mobile or Android )
Z - model with folding mechanism
  • followed by a mostly three-digit number . Earlier models had two-digit numbers, and in some cases four-digit numbers. Some cell phones have a single digit number , such as the Sony Ericsson P1i .
  • a final lower case letter indicates the region of marketing or use
a - American continent (South, Central, and North America)
c - China
i - EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa )
im - EMEA with i-mode functionality
Combinations of letters are possible.
Sony Ericsson also uses Asian-sounding names for its current models (Naite, Yari, Aino , Satio ).
The "i" in the name has been deleted from the models that have appeared since the second quarter of 2008.

Sony Ericsson also developed phone series under the names of Sony's own brands. In 2005, for example, the W800 was the first Walkman mobile phone to be introduced. His focus is on music reproduction. The K750 was also released in 2005, and for the first time special emphasis was placed on the function and operation of the camera. Thanks to a separate release button, the mobile phone could be conveniently held horizontally while taking pictures, analogous to full-fledged digital cameras. The K750 also had a convenient camera menu with typical camera settings such as white balance and photo effects. The successor model K800 , released in 2006, underlined the camera orientation with the designation Cyber-shot-Handy, and from this model a real xenon flash is installed in the respective K-series flagships. In 2008, the XPERIA X1, the first model of the new premium brand XPERIA, was presented, which specifically addresses the increasing need for mobile communication via the Internet and for mobile multimedia experiences.

In February 2012, Sony Mobile Communications presented its first own series since the split from Ericsson, the Xperia NXT series, at the Mobile World Congress. As early as January 2012, Sony Mobile Communications presented Sony's flagship Xperia S at CES 2012, without announcing its membership in the series , which is Sony's first smartphone since it split from Ericsson.

In March 2012, Sony Mobile Communications presented the Sony Xperia sola smartphone, which can also be operated without operating the screen, for example with gloves.

At IFA 2012, Sony presented the new global flagship Xperia T together with the Xperia V and Xperia J.

Tablets

At IFA 2012 on August 29, 2012, Sony announced that tablets would be sold under the Sony Mobile brand from this date. The first and also announced at IFA tablet is the Xperia Tablet S .

sustainability

The GreenHeart portfolio includes ecological innovations that contribute to the general environmental compatibility of mobile phones. The first devices in the GreenHeart series are the C901 GreenHeart ™ and the Naite. The printed instructions for use have been replaced by integrated electronic instructions. Recycled plastics and an energy-efficient display help reduce CO 2 emissions from cell phones by 15 percent. Plastic is not used in the packaging; the accumulator is packed in paper and the phone in a cloth bag. In Greenpeace's Guide to Greener Electronics , Sony Mobile Communications received 4.1 out of 10 points.
