The Sony Xperia Z (or Sony C6603 , Sony Xperia Yuga ) was presented on January 7, 2013 at the CES in Las Vegas and is a Full HD Android smartphone from the Sony Xperia series .
Display
The Sony Xperia Z has a 5 inch (12.7 cm) TFT display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (approx. 443 ppi pixel density ) and a color space of 16 million colors. A film on the scratch-resistant glass is supposed to prevent it from breaking, the integrated BRAVIA Engine 2 optimizes the contrast, the coloring, the color noise and the sharpness of the images. OptiContrast and DirectTouch should also bring the display closer to the touch panel, avoid light reflection and make the display even blacker when it is switched off.
The touch screen supports multi-touch - gestures with up to ten fingers.
camera
With the Exmor RS for mobile BSI CMOS sensor, the camera allows the first smartphone in the world HDR - video recording, which is available even in full HD resolution. In addition, the 13.1-MP main camera - in addition to the 2.1-MP front camera - other features such as a 16-fachen- digital zoom , a flash with pulsating LED and photo light, auto focus , focus and recording by tapping, geotagging , a Image stabilization, red-eye reduction, self-timer and face and smile detection. In burst mode , the camera can record ten images per second at 9.6 MP, without a consecutive amount limit. Despite the relatively high number of megapixels, night shots should also be possible without noise. This is achieved with the BSI sensor from Sony, which was developed together with Toshiba. The rather poor low-light performance is caused by the fact that the 13 megapixels are distributed over a rather small 1 / 3.2 ″ sensor.
design
The appearance of the Xperia Z was developed according to the OmniBalance concept, with the front or back and the edges (not the corners) coated with glass. At 7.9 mm thick, the Xperia Z is relatively thin in relation to its size. The same design concept is used for all other smartphones and tablets in the Xperia Z series.
Connectivity
The Xperia Z supports data transmission via WLAN with the common 802.11b / g / n standard (2.4 GHz) as well as 802.11a / n in the 5 GHz band. NFC enables the transfer of data, for example by touching two NFC-enabled devices. One of the implementations of NFC are the SmartTags . Settings and / or actions can be assigned to these “tags” in different colors, thereby simplifying device settings. Bluetooth 4.0 enables the use of Bluetooth Low Energy or Bluetooth Smart .
strength
The housing of the Xperia Z is waterproof and dustproof according to the IP57 standard. This means that dust in harmful amounts or a 30-minute submergence in 1 m deep water does not cause any damage.
Modding
Sony directly supports the modding of the operating system with the possibility of unlocking the bootloader of the Android smartphone; The sources of the kernel (code name Yuga ) are made available in the Free Xperia Project . A key combination (* # * # 7378423 # * # *) takes you to the service menu, in which you can see the information as to whether the bootloader can be unlocked.
Evaluation and criticism
In expert tests such as B. Connect magazine particularly praised the display and the very balanced equipment of the software and hardware, as well as the very good wireless properties. According to the connect test, the send and receive quality is z. B. in the UMTS network better than the successor models ( Z1 and Z2 ).
