The Xperia brand stands for a series of smartphones and tablets from Sony (or Sony Mobile after the dissolution of Sony Ericsson ).

Xperia

The Xperia product series was presented on February 10, 2008 in Barcelona to meet the convergence of the application areas web , multimedia and applications on high-quality mobile devices. Access to all important functions should be particularly easy thanks to a user interface newly developed by Sony Ericsson, the “Xperia panel interface”. With the statement by Rikko Sakaguchi (Head of Portfolio and Propositions, Sony Ericsson): “Our vision for the XPERIA ™ X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment within a distinctive design” (German: “Our goal for the XPERIA ™ X1 is to deliver a seamless amalgamation of mobile network communication and multimedia entertainment in a distinctive design. ” ) Sony Ericsson positioned the first device in the series clearly in the same segment as the iPhone . Since Sony no longer ships its smartphones and tablets with Windows Mobile, but with Android , the so-called Sony UI , a user interface designed for Android, has been added to Android. This includes pre-installed apps, its own design and various functions, such as support for the DualShock 4 controller integrated into the system or an energy-saving mode called "Stamina Mode".

Xperia Touch

In addition to numerous smartphones and tablet PCs , there has been a special feature with an integrated digital projector since 2017 : the Sony Xperia Touch has an infrared camera that can be used to determine the position of a finger on the projection surface. The device should be able to be operated in a similar way to a tablet PC.

Xperia Z1 Compact

The Xperia Z1 Compact (already released in Japan as the Z1f at the end of December 2013) was presented by Sony on January 6, 2014 at the CES in Las Vegas.

It has a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, a 20.7-megapixel camera with EXMOR sensor, which is also used in the same form in the Xperia Z1. Users report a design flaw that adversely affects the images taken: the LED flash shines through a gap between the edge of the camera lens and the plastic back of the smartphone. As a result, a light in the color of the back wall of the Z1 Compact, which is illuminated from below, lands in front of the lens and then on the finished photo. This effect is particularly noticeable on pictures taken in the dark.

Like the Xperia Z1, it is protected against dust and water in accordance with IP58 . The front is made of glass, the back is made of plastic. The model number is D5503.

Xperia Z3

The Xperia Z3 was presented by Sony in September 2014 at the IFA in Berlin. It is very similar to its predecessor, the Xperia Z2, with the 5.2-inch screen with full HD resolution and the 20.7 megapixel camera. The Snapdragon 801 processor is also the same, but clocked slightly higher at 2.5 GHz. Both devices have 3 GB of RAM. The battery has shrunk by 100 mAh to 3100 mAh. Only the dust and water protection according to IP68 applies to one and a half meters in the water instead of only half a meter. The front and back are again made of glass, the sides are also made of aluminum, but a little rounder. The device is a bit shorter, less wide, thinner and therefore also lighter with the same screen. In addition, there are slightly different color variants with black, white, mint and copper than with the Z2 (black, white and purple).

Xperia Z3 Compact

Xperia Z3 Compact with original packaging

The Xperia Z3 Compact was presented together with the Xperia Z3 at the IFA in September 2014 in Berlin. Analogous to the Z1 Compact , the smaller device uses almost the same hardware as the larger one, only with a smaller screen and, accordingly, a smaller housing. The Z3 Compact has a 4.6-inch screen that has a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels . The Snapdragon 801 SoC used is the same as in the Z3. Although the screen is slightly larger compared to the Z1 Compact, the Z3 Compact is just as tall and wide and even a bit thinner and lighter.

The device was praised for still offering upper-class hardware in a more compact housing.

“The rounded housing and the glass back give a high-quality impression. In terms of technology, the Z3 Compact can draw on unlimited resources. When it comes to speed and photo quality, you don't have to compromise on the top model Xperia Z3; when it comes to endurance, the small model is even ahead. In addition, with all Xperia Z models, you can stay relaxed even in the rain. "

- Michael Huch : ComputerBILD.de

“With the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact there is a new entry in the top 3 of the list and that with more than just a remarkable 101 hours in the endurance rating. That's over four days in which the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact did NOT have to be plugged in. According to GSMArena, not even the new Stamina 2.0 mode was active and that really means something. Apart from that, it's just a great smartphone, which you can see again in our HandsOn from IFA 2014. But also in the three other disciplines of 3G talk time, surfing the web and video playback, the compact from Sony is right at the forefront. "

Xperia Z3 + / Z4 / Z4v

The Xperia Z4 was introduced on April 20, 2015 as the successor to the Xperia Z3. The Z3 +, which was confirmed for Germany on May 26, 2015, was an adapted version of the Z4 and Z4v. The Z4v was US exclusive (Verizon). The main difference was the display resolution (1440p (Z4v) vs 1080p (Z3 + / Z4)) and the Android software used. The main difference between the Z3 + / Z4 / Z4v and its predecessor is the built-in Snapdragon 810 SoC, which contains a new 64-bit eight-core processor and an improved graphics unit called "Adreno 430", and the 5 megapixel front camera which is equipped with a wide angle lens. Other slight visual changes are the more glossy frame and the stereo speakers, which are now placed on the edge of the front. The dimensions have decreased slightly by 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm, making the Xperia Z3 + / Z4 more compact compared to the Xperia Z3 with the same screen size, and also reducing the weight by 8 grams.

It was presented on September 2, 2015 together with the Xperia Z5 Compact and the Xperia Z5 Premium as part of the IFA as the successor to the Xperia Z3 +. The innovations compared to the predecessor come to the fore in more detail. For example, the frame has been redesigned and matt glass is now used on the back. In addition, the new Sony IMX 230 camera sensor, which is already installed in the Xperia M5 , is now used. This now has a resolution of 23 megapixels. The predecessors from the Xperia Z1 to the Xperia Z3 + used a 20.7 megapixel sensor and the Xperia M5 one with 21.5 megapixels. It also uses hybrid autofocus, which is 0.03 seconds faster than the blink of a human eye. According to initial reports, the predecessor's overheating problems in connection with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC have been fixed. Like its predecessors, the Xperia Z5 is waterproof and dustproof, namely according to IP65 / 68 certification. It is available in 2 variants (E6603, E6653) as the Xperia Z5 with one SIM card slot and in another 2 variants (E6633, E6683) as the Xperia Z5 Dual with 2 SIM card slots.

Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Compact and XZ2 Premium

The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact were presented at MWC 2018. For the first time in years, Sony made more profound design changes. The bezels of the display have been reduced, which is why the fingerprint sensor was attached to the back for the first time. The specialty of the XZ2 is the so-called Dynamic Vibration System . The bass is amplified by the vibration motor, so you can "feel" the bass. It is also the first Sony smartphone to support wireless charging. Two months later, Sony presented the Xperia XZ2 Premium as its third smartphone with a 4K display after the XZ Premium and the Z5 Premium . This does not have the 18: 9 format of the other two devices, instead it uses the usual 16: 9 aspect ratio and has a diagonal of 5.8 ". It is also characterized by a dual camera system on the back , consisting of the 19-megapixel sensor of the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact and a 12-megapixel black / white sensor for improved quality in poor lighting conditions. Otherwise, the design is based on that of the XZ2.
