The High Tech Computer Corporation ( HTC ) is a Taiwanese manufacturer of mobile phones , tablet computers , Action camcorders , fitness trackers and virtual reality goggles (VR).
history
HTC was founded on May 15, 1997, and its headquarters are in Taoyuan (Taiwan). The company focuses on the development and manufacture of electronic devices that combine the characteristics and functions of a cell phone and a portable computer in different ways .
On November 5th, 2007 it was announced that HTC has joined the Open Handset Alliance initiated by Google for the Linux -based mobile platform Android . In the USA, the G1 was launched on the market in autumn 2008 as the first Android device by HTC and T-Mobile. The product launch for Germany took place on February 2, 2009. On January 5, 2010, Google introduced the Nexus One smartphone , which is also manufactured by HTC. One year later, HTC was voted best device manufacturer 2011 by the GSMA .
Although HTC initially only sold Android cell phones with a locked bootloader , which made it impossible to load a so-called custom ROM , HTC later relented. Bootloaders will no longer be blocked in the future, and a program will be developed to unblock devices that are already in circulation.
In 2010 the computer magazine Chip presented the company with the 'CHIP Award "Company of the Year" 2010'.
In 2012 and 2013 HTC suffered a sharp drop in sales and even reported its first quarterly loss since going public in 2002. In addition, numerous executives left as a result of the weak sales figures in the first half of 2013. By focusing on fewer device series and in particular the series around the flagship HTC One , HTC is trying to counteract this trend and strengthen its market position again.
On September 21, 2017, it was announced that Google will acquire parts of HTC's smartphone division for 1.1 billion US dollars, along with a license agreement that will allow Google to use HTC patents in the future. HTC will continue to develop smartphones in the future and bring them to market under its own brand. At the same time, a new full-size model was announced.
HTC has had a partnership with Animoca since July 2018 . This includes product development and collaboration in the areas of: games , blockchain , artificial intelligence , machine learning , augmented reality and virtual reality .
Product range
HTC manufactured around 90 percent of all Windows Mobile smartphones worldwide in 2010. The devices are sold through the subsidiaries Qtek (until June 2006) and Dopod (since 2006 majority owned by HTC) as well as through various resellers (including Orange , T-Mobile , Vodafone , O 2 ). In Germany, sales run directly under the HTC brand. In Austria, the first devices were marketed under the HTC brand name in 2008. The resellers provide and sell the devices with their own branding and name and are also responsible for customer service . The first Windows CE smartphone was the Xda from 2002. The “X” stands for the interplay of language and data in a product. The letters "D" and "A" stand for "Digital Assistant" as with PDA .
On August 11, 2011, HTC bought over $ 300 million in Beats Audio and holds 51 percent of the shares. Beats Audio is founded by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre . In addition to the existing video streaming service “HTC Watch”, HTC is planning its own music streaming service. In March 2012, HTC-owned headphone manufacturer Beats Electronics took over from Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre runs the music streaming service MOG .
HTC sells its products in the following device categories:
- Touch-Phone: Mobile phones of the new touch family , which are controlled with a finger via a touchscreen display
- PDA-Phone: pen-controlled mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) design
- Smartphone : Mobile phone with extensive hardware keyboard, some with additional touchscreen
- Mobile computers (pocket computers): Microsoft Windows Mobile (UMPC) - very small portable computers with the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system with mobile phone functions
In mid-October 2012, HTC announced that it would no longer manufacture tablet PCs for the time being. The reason for this was the success of the iPad . However, HTC has not ruled out re-entering the market as soon as a suitable way of differentiating Apple is found. However, in November 2014, the Google Nexus 9 tablet came out, which is also manufactured by HTC.
HTC also manufactures many products and model variants for other companies ("OEM" = Original Equipment Manufacturer ). The best known are the Google Nexus One , the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 , the Xda series from O₂ (Telefónica Germany) and the MDA and VPA series from Telekom Deutschland and Vodafone.
On April 4, 2013, HTC presented the HTC First phone as part of the Facebook event “Come See Our New Home on Android” . This means that Facebook's Android Home interface will find a smartphone prepared for it.
On March 1, 2015, HTC presented the HTC Vive, a head-mounted display that was co-produced with Valve . With the HTC Grip , a fitness tracker is also part of the HTC product range for the first time.
In 2017 the Android 7 smartphones U Ultra and U Play as well as the HTC One X10 in India and Russia were presented.
In 2018 HTC introduced its blockchain smartphone HTC Exodus .
