particularities

The HTC Dream , also marketed as the T-Mobile G1 , is a smartphone that was manufactured by the HTC Corporation . It was the first device to be launched with the Android operating system . Since autumn 2008 it has only been sold with SIM lock for T-Mobile US under the name T-Mobile G1 in the USA and Great Britain. In Austria the T-Mobile G1 was available since January 30, 2009, in Germany since February 2, 2009 without SIM lock and exclusively through T-Mobile .

The Dream offers five function keys, a trackball , a sliding touchscreen and a keyboard underneath .

The Dream is optimized for access to the Internet , especially to services from Google , which can often be accessed with a single click. It enables connections via wireless local area networks and data transmission in cellular networks using the accelerated HSPA and EDGE procedures . In contrast to other smartphones, no synchronization with a personal computer is provided. Instead, the Dream updates data such as calendar entries or the phone book with a Google server. In the event of a cell phone crash , this data can then be restored. This data synchronization function, with which there is a constant connection to the Internet and Google can receive personal data from the user, can be switched off. The G1 also creates a phone book that can be sorted according to popularity. The synchronization with the Google server creates internal statistics that organize the calls in the phone book.

In the US, the device was available at launch for $ 179 and only with a 24-month contract for voice and data services. The price in Germany was EUR 1 in connection with a T-Mobile contract for 24 months, with this contract costing EUR 39 per month with a data volume of 1 GB.

operating system

Android runs on the HTC Dream with the so-called Google Experience (tools and adjustments from Google). It includes support for Google Mail (including push e-mail ), Google Calendar and Android Market, today: Google Play Store .

The last version released by HTC is Android 2.1; furthermore, no official updates are available.

This explained e.g. B. T-Mobile with the limited storage space of the phone: In fact, there are now ports from Android 2.x to the G1 (especially CyanogenMod ), which include the freely available part of Android. In the course of the installation, however, the (Google) components that have not been released can be added. The installation requires a few “tricks”, since on the one hand the telephone normally prevents the installation of non-official system versions and on the other hand the built-in memory space is insufficient to store the software in the delivery state.

With these newer, unofficial Android versions, the G1 can be supplemented with "standardized" tethering via Bluetooth ( PAN ) and USB (Remote NDIS) in addition to the revised user interface . The mobile phone cannot be connected to external devices.
