180 ° rotatable display

The HTC Universal , mainly known in Germany as T-Mobile MDA Pro, is a PDA phone based on Windows Mobile 5.0, manufactured by HTC Corporation . It was both the first 3G / UMTS capable PDA phone and the first to be shipped with Windows Mobile 5.

In contrast to newer models from the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, the device was not sold by the manufacturer itself, but only by alternative suppliers or providers . It was sold under names such as O2 XDA Exec, Orange SPV M5000, Dopod 900, Qtek 9000, T-Mobile MDA Pro, I-mate JasJar, Vodafone v1640 (also VPA IV), E-Plus PDA IV and Grundig GR980. All models have the same hardware and only differ in case color and branding .

The most striking feature of the device is the 180 ° rotatable display, which allows a quick change between portrait and landscape format. The GUI automatically changes to the desired mode when it is turned or folded, but not via a swivel sensor as on the iPhone .

  • Standard battery capacity: 1620 mAh at 3.6-3.8 V.

Structure of the internal memory

The internal flash memory is divided into five "partitions":

  1. 08 MB for the radio ROM in which the driver for the telephone is integrated
  2. 01 MB for the boot loader that starts the next partition
  3. 64 MB for the CE-ROM, in which the operating system, but also the drivers and the standard programs are integrated. In the case of "cooked" ROMs, this partition is replaced.
  4. 10 MB for the extended ROM, in which the providers integrate their branding. The content is installed after a hard reset (device reset). With the “cooked” ROMs, this memory is often also available as freely usable memory.
  5. 44 MB of memory that can be written by the user (depending on the strength of the branding, a few MBs are already occupied)

Extensions

Remove the SIM lock

In contrast to the models from Qtek and i-mate, the models that are sold by providers such as T-Mobile are protected by Netlock and can be exempted against payment of € 100 or after a waiting period of 24 months. However, it is also possible to activate it with a free tool from buzz_lightyear at buzzdev.net. This will void the guarantee .

More powerful batteries

Other manufacturers offer far more powerful batteries for the device, which far exceed the 1600 mAh installed in the factory in terms of run time and discharge time. These batteries reach values of up to 4800 mAh, which enables calls of over 12 hours in length and "slumber times" of over two weeks. However, stronger batteries are also heavier and increase the total mass to over 350 grams (without battery: approx. 100 grams).

Activatable features

  • WLAN according to the 802.11g standard (for logging into "Only-G" routers , no speed improvement)
  • RealVGA, a mode that takes full advantage of the high VGA resolution (at the expense of legibility).
  • SDHC

Other operating systems

In contrast to some PDA manufacturers, HTC does not offer an upgrade option for its devices to new operating systems. However, some developer communities have formed who install the Windows Mobile 6 operating system on the HTC Universal on the basis of unofficial builds . The XDA-Developers community is constantly working on problem solving and developing new applications and possibilities for the HTC Universal.

The most successful German ROM with Windows Mobile 6.1 has been available in version 6.0 since December 24, 2008 and brings many features and programs with it. However, the project is no longer being developed.

Windows Mobile version 6.5, which has been heavily optimized by Microsoft for finger operation, is also available.

Some developers at XDA-Developers port a Linux operating system to the HTC Universal. It has certain limitations and does not recognize parts of the hardware such as the built-in camera.

Members of the XDA-Developers port also the mobile operating system Android to the HTC Universal.
