biography

After graduating from high school in 1926, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna until 1931. He then worked from 1932 to 1938 as a psychiatrist and neurologist . Together with his brother, the physicist Friedrich Dussik, he researched ultrasound diagnostics from 1937 .

Karl Dussik was the first doctor to use ultrasound as a diagnostic tool. With the new technology, he was the first to visualize the ventricles of the brain. From 1938 he worked in the neurological department of a clinic in Bad Ischl (Salzkammergut) and continued to examine ultrasound procedures.

The brothers called their method hyperphonography. Ultrasound was sent through the patient's head in a water bath and received on the other side. Dussik wrote in 1949: “Hyperphonography appears as a new, promising path, which, however, cannot and should not exist on its own. Rather, it will be incorporated into the brain diagnostics building as a new component ... "
