Franz Spina

Franz Spina (born October 5, 1868 in Markt Türnau in Schönhengstgau , Moravia ; † September 17, 1938 in Prague ) was a German bohemist and politician. He was - alongside Robert Mayr-Harting , Ludwig Czech and Erwin Zajicek - one of the German ministers in the First Czechoslovak Republic.

Life

Franz Spina grew up in the bilingual community of Markt Türnau. As a child, he therefore mastered the Czech language in addition to his German mother tongue . He attended the utraquist elementary school in his hometown and in 1879 switched to the Piarist high school in Mährisch Trübau , which he graduated with the Matura in 1887. In 1887 he began to study German, classical philology and philosophy at the University of Vienna . In 1888 he enrolled at Karl Ferdinand University with the aim of becoming a high school professor . At the same time he became a member of the Constantia fraternity in 1889 , which was merged into the Sudetia fraternity in Munich . In 1892 he passed the teaching examination in German, Latin and Greek. In 1901 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

He had jobs in Braunau (East Bohemia) and Mährisch Neustadt , from 1901 to 1905 he was a high school professor in Mährisch Trübau . In 1906 he was appointed lecturer for the Czech language at the German University in Prague. This was followed by his habilitation in the Czech language in 1909 . Spina wrote numerous publications on the cultural history of Bohemia. From 1929 to 1938 he was editor of the Slawischen Rundschau .

In the First Czechoslovak Republic , he was elected to the Czechoslovak Parliament in 1920 as a member of the Union of Farmers (Czechoslovakia) (BdL). In 1926 he was appointed Minister for Public Works. In 1936 he was reappointed Minister without Portfolio.
