Windows Mobile was a compact operating system from Microsoft and the predecessor of Windows Phone , combined with a collection of applications for mobile devices. It is based on the Win32 - API . Devices that use Windows Phone or Windows Mobile include pocket PCs , smartphones , and portable media centers. The operating system is designed in such a way that a similarity to the PC versions of Windows can be recognized, although the respective target architectures and code bases are hardly similar. In contrast, Windows Phone has been completely redeveloped.

Common features of Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile for Pocket PC includes in most versions:

  • A Today page that shows today's date , owner information, upcoming appointments, new email messages, and tasks. It also contains a bar for notifications, which can use icons to inform the user about various things, such as battery life or open utilities. Applications can create additional entries on the Today page. The background image can be customized.
  • A task bar, it shows the current time , the volume , the battery charge status and the connection status. When a program or dialog is open, an “OK” or “Close” button appears next to the clock. The important extra of the taskbar is the start button, which has a similar function as in the desktop versions of Windows. In the start menu there is a list of the most recently used applications, nine changeable entries at the beginning and additional entries for the programs, settings, help and search.
  • A stripped-down version of Microsoft Office . This consists of Pocket Word and Pocket Excel . From version Windows Mobile 5.0 onwards, Pocket PowerPoint is included, which can display files but not edit them. These versions contain the most necessary functions of their desktop counterparts, extended functions such as graphics and tables were missing up to version 5.0. ActiveSync offers the possibility of converting files from the desktop versions into compatible documents for the PocketPC. Depending on the version, this conversion is more or less lossy, especially formatting, field functions and the like. are affected.
  • Outlook Mobile, a PIM application that fulfills the same functions as its desktop counterpart. It can be synchronized with this via ActiveSync. An alternative is direct comparison with an Exchange server via an online connection.
  • The Windows Media Player . Most of the devices were shipped with version 9, newer hardware contains version 10. Version 10 can be downloaded and installed for some specific devices - including devices from the Dell Axim range. The media player supports WMA , WMV , MP3 , and AVI files. MPEG files are not currently supported; there are third-party programs that upgrade this capability.

Versions

Windows Mobile 2002

Windows Mobile 2002, which is based on Windows CE 3.0, was the first version of Windows CE that was marketed under the name "Windows Mobile". Designed specifically for keyboardless Pocket PCs with QVGA resolution, Windows Mobile 2002 (like the original Pocket PC versions) was Microsoft's only operating system for embedded systems .

Windows Mobile 2003

The second version, called Windows Mobile 2003, was released on June 23, 2003 and came in three flavors. Two are very similar: Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC Phone Edition, which was specially developed for Pocket PCs with telephone functions, such as the XDA and MDA.

The third variant is an edition called Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone, which - despite several similarities with the Pocket PC - represents a significantly different platform that also requires software that is specially tailored to it: Windows Mobile Smartphones do not have a touchscreen, essentially lower display resolutions, a normal telephone keypad and are specially designed for one-handed operation.

Windows Mobile 2003 is based on Windows CE 4.20.

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, known as Windows Mobile 2003SE, was released on March 24, 2004. It contained a number of improvements over its predecessor such as:

  • an option to rotate the screen 90 °. (Only available on certain PDA models, e.g. Acer N35)
  • Pocket Internet Explorer includes an option to display the page in a single column, which makes it easier to read web pages by only scrolling vertically.
  • VGA (640 × 480) - screen resolution is the new official resolution, in addition to the familiar 320 × 240 display. New square form factors (240 × 240 and 480 × 480 for VGA screens) have been added, suitable for hardware manufacturers who want to add a keyboard to the device.
  • Direct support for WPA , for many devices corresponding updates are also available for Windows Mobile 2003.

Windows Mobile 2003SE is based on Windows CE 4.21.

Windows Mobile 5.0

Windows Mobile 5 on a Motorola Q1

Windows Mobile 5.0, originally called "Magneto", was released on May 9, 2005. It is based on Windows CE 5.0 and contains the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 in some distributions , which can otherwise be installed additionally (free of charge). The included Internet browser is now called "Internet Explorer Mobile" and no longer "Pocket Internet Explorer".

Skills included:

  • A new version of "Office Mobile"
    • PowerPoint Mobile, which enables the playback of PowerPoint files, has been added
    • Excel Mobile got graphic capabilities
    • Word Mobile could display tables and graphics
  • Windows Media Player 10 Mobile
  • Image and video package that combines the management of images and videos
  • Bluetooth support with a specially developed Microsoft Bluetooth stack, with fewer capabilities than the previous Broadcom / Widcomm alternatives, with some manufacturers such as HP still using the alternative Broadcomm / Widcomm stack.
  • Virtual GPS port for parallel access of several programs to the GPS data
  • QWERTY keyboard support is included as standard.
  • Ability to report crashes errors, similar to current Windows systems.
  • ActiveSync 4.0, up to 10-15% faster when synchronizing
  • The pocket PCs' non-volatile memory is also used for volatile data, which is intended to increase the service life of the battery. Up to now, up to 50 percent (enough for 72 hours) of the battery capacity was reserved to hold data in the volatile RAM memory. This means that the saved data and programs you have installed yourself are no longer lost when the battery is empty. The RAM memory, which is divided into work and data memory under Windows Mobile 2003, is now completely available as such, the operating system and changes to it as well as personal data are now stored together in ROM, comparable to the iPaq File Store in earlier versions, which is no longer available in WM5 .

Windows Mobile 5.0, was released at Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference 2005 in Las Vegas . There are four different versions, which are only partially compatible with the application.

Later the Mobile Security and Feature Pack (MSFP) was submitted, which enabled GPRS-based comparison with Exchange 2003 SP2 and higher on Windows mobile devices with telephone functions, and added some security functions that are desirable for mobile Exchange clients. The Directpush synchronization technology enables real-time synchronization of mail, contacts, appointments and notes.

Windows Mobile 6

In version 6.1 Standard, the design of the surface was based even more closely on Vista; the start bar is now slightly transparent, notes, messages and short messages are displayed in small information windows, and you can switch to other windows to the left and right. The surface of the Professional and Classic version has not changed.

Important innovations:

  • SMS are displayed in thread form (like in a forum)

  • Security: Encryption of the PIM database and other optional folders that can be activated via Exchange.

Despite being more closely related to Windows Vista, synchronization with the Vista standard programs Mail and Calendar is not possible - it still only works with Outlook.

Windows Mobile 6.5

Version 6.5 was released on May 11, 2009. The first devices were expected for October 6, 2009. As an innovation, version 6.5 offers a preinstalled application for access to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile , which offers applications for download. In addition, numerous smartphone data could be synchronized online with the My Phone service, which has now been discontinued. The first planned honeycomb surface, also called honeycomb, was rejected after criticism. Instead, larger icons should now be used. Despite these changes to the surface, the basic layout will be retained, as Microsoft announced at MIX09. In addition, the orientation of Windows Mobile should no longer only be in the business sector, but also much more in the consumer sector.

The innovations:

  • Kinetic scrolling
  • Titanium , a novel UI for the Today screen
  • Internet Explorer 6 Mobile with Flash support
  • Native Facebook client
  • New device lock, comparable to Slide2Unlock from the iPhone
  • Transparent start and softkey bars
  • Web-based applications (widgets)
  • My phone
  • Windows Marketplace for Mobile

Windows Mobile 6.5.3

Version 6.5.3 was officially presented by Microsoft on February 2, 2010. The first devices with the operating system appeared in the second quarter of 2010. The main focus was on improving finger operation.

Innovations:

Windows Embedded Handheld

In June 2010 Microsoft announced a new operating system variant based on Windows Mobile 6.5 for the second half of the year under the brand name Windows Embedded Handheld (currently used for both Windows Embedded CE and Windows Mobile) . No new functions should be added in the first version. This version was released in January 2011. A version based on Windows 7 technologies, currently called Windows Embedded Compact 7, with new functions is then to appear in the second half of 2011.

Windows Mobile 7 / Windows Phone

Windows Phone on a Samsung Omnia 7

Windows Mobile 7 should actually appear in 2009, but several delays caused Microsoft to release Windows Mobile 6.5 as an intermediate step. Version 7 was announced on February 15, 2010 under the new name Windows Phone at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona. The developers are particularly concentrating on the more intuitive user interface, which should support multi-touch and gesture control in order to win over non-business customers with their operating system. Another decisive factor is the division into so-called “hubs” - subject areas - which are reminiscent of the Xbox or Windows Media Center and are intended to prevent nested menus.

Windows Phone 7 is based on Windows CE 6.0 R3 and parts of Windows Embedded Compact 7. Please note that there is no update from Windows Mobile to Windows Phone. The successor Windows Phone 8 is no longer based on Windows CE, but on the desktop system Windows NT 6.2.

Windows Mobile 8 / Windows Phone

Windows Phone 8 start screen

Version 8 of the Windows Phone operating system for mobile phones was known under the code name Apollo during the development phase. In contrast to its predecessor Windows Phone 7, it is no longer based on Windows CE, but on the same Windows NT kernel as Windows 8 and Windows RT . It was officially unveiled on June 20, 2012 at the Windows Phone Summit in San Francisco. Since a different kernel is used from this version than in the previous versions, this operating system is generally no longer included in the Windows Mobile line.

Windows 10 Mobile

Windows 10 Mobile was an edition of the Windows 10 operating system that was specially adapted for use on smartphones and small tablets (screen size <8 inches). It runs on modern CPUs of the ARM and IA-32 architecture. This version combines the smartphone operating system Windows Phone and the desktop / tablet operating system Windows into one operating system. Apps should for the most part be able to use the same source code everywhere. Windows 10 Mobile was first presented to the public at an event on January 21, 2015. There should be a free update for most smartphones with Windows Phone 8.1, but this has been revoked for most devices.

Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise

Windows 10 IoT Mobile Enterprise contains all the features of Windows 10 Mobile with additional components from Windows 10 Enterprise. It runs on X86, x64 or ARM architecture.
