Microsoft Windows Phone 8 or Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 is an operating system for cell phones from the US company Microsoft . It belongs to the series of Windows Phone systems of the manufacturer and is based on the same Windows NT - kernel as the in-house operating systems Windows 8 ( Microsoft Windows 8.1 ) and Windows RT . Windows Phone 8 was introduced on June 20, 2012 at the Windows Phone Summit in San Francisco . On July 16, 2014, Microsoft released the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

The operating system is the last published Windows Phone system from Microsoft, received support until July 2017 and was replaced by Windows 10 Mobile .

Mainstream support for Windows Phone 8.1 was maintained until July 11, 2017; extended support is not planned.

Update to Windows Phone 8.1

All end devices that were delivered with Windows Phone 8 can in principle be updated to Windows Phone 8.1. However, not all manufacturers provide the official update. In the case of Huawei devices , the update is only possible through Microsoft's Preview for Developers itself, which can also be installed by normal users. The update has been released for the Lumia range developed by Microsoft Mobile itself , the Ativ S from Samsung and HTC 8X.

Update to Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft has announced an update to Windows 10 Mobile for all Lumia devices. It was subsequently restricted that not all devices receive this update. All devices with at least 8 GB of internal memory and 1024 MB RAM should receive the update, devices with 4 GB of internal memory are left out, as this space is not sufficient for Windows 10. These promises were broken when it was released, only some of the devices receive the update.

It is not possible to update devices running Windows Phone 7 . However, it is possible to upgrade from Windows Phone 8 to Windows Phone 8.1. You can also upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile .

Apps or applications

Apps (applications) for the previous version Windows Phone 7 can for the most part also run on Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1.

Since April 2014 it has been possible to develop apps that also run under Windows 8 and vice versa. This is made possible by the Windows Runtime ( WinRT ) runtime environment . With this, apps that were created for the Windows 8 touch interface (including updates) also run unchanged on Windows Phone smartphones. The compatibility with smartphone and / or tablet / PC has since been marked with small icons in the Windows Phone Store .

Windows Phone 8 was shipped to smartphone manufacturers at the end of September 2012. The first model to be shown was the Samsung Ativ S on August 29, 2012 in Berlin. The two Nokia devices Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 have been available since November 5th. HTC released the HTC 8X on November 5th . In the second quarter of 2013, Windows Phone's global smartphone market share was 3.7%. In individual markets, including Germany and Mexico, Windows Phone achieved higher market shares of up to 12% by February 2013. At the end of 2013, the market share in the five largest European markets (Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Spain) rose to 10%, while the global share fell to 3% in the fourth quarter. In Germany, too, the market share fell to 7.1% in the second quarter. By the second quarter of 2014, the worldwide number of units (8 million) and the market share (2.7%) continued to decline. In the third quarter of 2015, sales at Microsoft decreased from 9.3 million devices (third quarter 2014) to 5.8 million.
